A drone just crashed on the White House grounds according to the news this morning. Maybe something good will come of it.

The lack of common sense and the stupidity of the common drone flyer will blow it for all .My guess is they will become outlawed pretty soon or become so regulated that the masses won't be able to use them as they want to . Hope I'm not the one on the news who crashes my plane cause I hit one.

What that means is that we're creating an industry. And, anyone familiar with law enforcement can tell you that the worst scenario you can come up with is to permit an activity for a period of time, then pass a law against it, and hand it over to the enforcement folks to "fix". That's exactly where we're going with this.

The trigger will be a major accident, with hundreds killed, I fear, by a collision with a "UAS".

But, the problem is, there are a LOT more folks interested in operating "UAS" now than there are interested in operating airplanes. Frankly, it would be pretty easy to simply ground all the "non essential" airplanes (like us) and figure out how to separate airliners from drones.

That may well be the "ultimate solution". After all, we wouldn't want those Europeans to get ahead of us with this new technology......and who gives a shit about Cessnas and Pipers anyway?

AV8R, hopefully you just said this in the heat of the moment?

It's this kind of thinking that is the largest danger to General Aviation!

The same argument you have against the drones could be used against you!!!

After all I assume you are not on a IFR flight plan being told where to go by the controllers in order to maintain separation from other aircraft.

I am sure there is a very small percentage of drone pilots that are causing problems. Especially at 9K feet! I doubt this is some dude in his back yard trying to disrupt aircraft.

I think education of the public is the way to go. maybe the FAA should put out a PSA???

Re: Damn near hit a flipping drone!

I have a DJI phantom 2 which is a quadcopter drone, it has autopilot and will fly a better approach coupled than my 530 and 55x autopilot.

That being said, the fact that you have a naysayer that doesnt believe it could be a drone flying that high, i call BS on that. I can easily take my phantom to at least 2-3000 feet on a good battery, just straight up with no other flying to be done. There are many videos where folks have taken them up incredibly high, above many cloud layers. Im based at a relatively small airport, and have the drone and a few electric rc airplanes with 50-60 inch wings and we fly them all day long at the airport in front of our hanger. We dont have much traffic other than AG flying.

The new drones are incredible, i cant believe the technology in them for 7-800 dollars.

Ha... And there are a bunch of pilots that are so busy looking at their fancy glass panels, they hardly look outside at all.. ha. . Which is worse?

I agree. Unfortunately, in most cases it's gonna hurt the pilot worse then the drone.

Yeah, that's pretty strong language. I caution against championing the banning of any of our freedoms, because it's only a stepping stone to the next one, which could be guns, airplanes, ATVs, and any number of other fun things that require some thought to safely operate.

There has to be a better way to address the RC multi-rotor issue. The general public knows so little about flying to begin with, much less the concept of mid-air collision. I think some knowledge and education coming from the manufacturers, direct to the consumers, is where the safety has to start.

Re: Damn near hit a flipping drone!

Drones are cool machines. do I think that anyone should just be able to buy one and start flying it around? Now with the technology now flying on can be done from your bedroom computer not safe and should not be done without some kind of training. now for guys flying them in the line of sight like RC planes who are responsible why not?

Re: Damn near hit a flipping drone!

I hate drones, had several close calls with them in Iraq. They were often at the wrong altitude( remote operator not having current altimeter setting?). Great technology, just not quite safe enough to be in the airspace system.

Re: Damn near hit a flipping drone!

Zane hit the nail on the head.

It seems to me that this would be an easy way to for jihadists to bring down a plane. Strap on some explosives and program the lat/lon + altitude of the outer marker at JFK, BOS, etc. Then, using your handheld com, wait until you're target of choice is joining the localizer and launch it. Maybe there is more to it than that, but it sure seems plausible.
