As a 9 year old, I remember unexpectedly encountering DC-3 wreckage strewn along on the Selway River a few weeks after it crashed in the summer of '79 while I was hiking with my family to Moose Creek. Pulleys, aluminum, the center console, and bits of fabric were all that was left to mark the violence of the incident.
These folks are fortunate indeed.

That's not much of a surprise if you have seen the show Ice Pilots NWT. Old birds like that on the daily grind of sched runs, it's surprising such incidences like that don't happen more frequently. It's a testament to the hard work of the maintenance crews.
Reminds of a great little documentary about flying DC-3s into real dirt bush strips in Columbia.(little dramatization)
