Re: Dead stick landing

Well done.

We had a guy that flew for us years ago that was court martialed by the french military for dead sticking a mirage fighter. He landed it perfectly on the runway, but according to their sop's he should have ejected.

I don't know anything about the mirage, but my brother flies the T-38. If they loose both engines on it, you can't depend on the engine free-wheeling enough to keep hydraulics alive, and you loose your flight controls. Their SOP is to punch out. Seems like maybe you could keep your airspeed up to keep the hydraulics alive if you knew you had a long runway to land on at higher than normal speed. On the other hand, my brother said the tires are not rated much above the normal landing speed, so maybe you'd blow a tire. Also, if you did loose control on final, you might end up killing a bunch of folks on the ground that you could have avoided if you got it pointed somewhere safe and punched out while you had more options.

Anyone know what the story is on the mirage?
