Denali/Anchorage Camping?

Looking for a few places to camp under the wing up near Denali or even closer to Anchorage for a few nights this summer. Most of the lodges in the region are out of my price range, but it's hard to tell if the airports care if you pop a tent? Any favorite recommendations? I know it's AK, but not looking for anything that requires an off-airport landing

Re: Denali/Anchorage Camping?

The Denali Park Strip is fairly close to the NPS campground. You'd have to check with the Park to see if reservations are required for the campground, I'd bet they are.

Good luck finding camping in ANC. Fairbanks, on the other hand, has a GREAT "Air Camper Park" at the NE end of the airport, with bathrooms, showers, fire pits, etc. Just around the corner is a Fred Meyer store for groceries, and etc. Bicycles at the camper park.

Re: Denali/Anchorage Camping?

Lots of people “camp” all over ANC, especially the park downtown :( .

F street is a good stop in ANC, pilots bar, good food and drink and free tillamook cheddar

For ANC I’d just get a hotel, lots of other pretty places to enjoy the vastness and nature of AK

Bold strip in Chugiak state park, Merrill field had camp site not sure if they still do. Check with lake hood if you can camp under the wing at transient.

Re: Denali/Anchorage Camping?

Kantishna 5Z5 is good camping. Bring a MSR Dromedary bag with water.

There are —many— off-“airport” strips in Alaska that are better than some airports in the lower 48. For instance, May Creek MYK to name just one.

Re: Denali/Anchorage Camping?

Is camping allowed at the Talkeetna village strip?
x2 Kantishna is a cool spot, especially for being in the Denali area.
Talkeetna has some dining and a grocery store, albeit a little drive out of town.

I believe no camping allowed onTalkeetna Village strip. Campgrounds two blocks to the East next to the Campground. Small store right off the end of the strip.

Re: Denali/Anchorage Camping?

I was up in talkeetna a couple years ago and had the opportunity to hang out with Rocket and his gal who own the Talkeetna Roadhouse. You can get a room at the roadhouse or stay in a cute cabin at their place right next to the village strip. He & his gal are very nice and we had a blast. (thanks again Rocket!!)

Re: Denali/Anchorage Camping?

You can camp at many of the remote strips listed on the sectionals even though they don't have formal camping areas. I've done this at McCarthy and Chandalar Lake up in the Brooks Range. Unless it's a bigger airport, there is nobody at these strips, so you just park and pitch a tent.

Re: Denali/Anchorage Camping?

The park service has some public use cabins in Wrangell-St Elias Natl Park (McCarthy area), although I've never tried them. I have used several Forest Service cabins, which are awesome, but they're on lakes and are float access only. Here's the link for Wrangell-St Elias.
