Desert runways and more

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Desert runways and more

Last Wednesday through Saturday my son and I flew from Longmont to the Chicken Strip. Went via Canon City, Wolf Creek Pass, Durango, Page, and Pahrump. Camped at the Chicken Strip and visited the warm springs the next morning. Day two we toured the area, landing at Darwin, Cinder Cone, Goler Heights, Johannesburg, Ballarat, and finally overnighted at Panamint Springs Resort. Hot day with southerly winds that seemed to be the wrong way for just about every runway. Looked at Minietta Mine strip, but too windy for us.

Day three we headed to Utah and landed at Hidden Splendor, Mexican Mountain, and Mineral Canyon. Had planned to camp at Mineral Canyon, but it was hot and buggy with no good river access, so we continued east and camped at Dolores Point in Colorado. Nice and cool at 7200 msl.

Great trip and finally saw a bunch of places I’d only read about. I learned some things about one-way strips and tailwinds. And I watched my son fly the airplane a lot better than I do. I've got some work to do.

Thanks for the post. It brought back fond memories of the desert strips I visited many years ago.

You're never too old to learn something stupid.

WOW! You managed to hit a lot of our local Mojave strips. Thanks for coming out and enjoying them!

Re: Desert runways and more

Thanks, guys. I had lots of fun on the Mojave and Utah runways! Sadly, I found my skills somewhat lacking, and a few times I thought, "hm, this is what Contact has been trying to tell us!"
