Desser 8.50x6 Smooth Tundra tires on 182?

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Desser 8.50x6 Smooth Tundra tires on 182?

Anyone know if it's possible to put the Desser 8.50x6 on my 182B? I'd like to use that tire on all wheels (I already have an Airglas fork with an 8.50x6 Goodyear). Thoughts/considerations?

The Airglas STC authorizes 8.50 x 6.00 tires, so yes, the Desser tires are approved under that STC.

I have run 8.50s on all three on a Cessna 206, and did NOT like it. Too hard to keep the nose wheel off during touchdown. A 182 would be the same or worse.

There’s a reason that Cessna installed a smaller tire on the nose of most if not all their tri gear planes.

Airglas amended their STC to permit an 8.00 nose tire with 8.50 mains. That’s what we did with our 206s and it restores the original geometry.....and is much better.

I for one would never configure a Cessna with same size tires all around.

Airframes Alaska says the desser 8.50 smooth will not fit in the airglas fork. They told me they have had a few customers call and complain that it didn't fit. Anyone else run into that?

Thanks MTV, sounds like I should look at putting larger tires on the mains. I'll have to study that option more. I appreciate the advice!

I’ve got the Aero Classic/Desser 8.50x6 4-ply smoothies on the mains of my ‘68 182L. When I first got them I had a 7.00x6 nose tire. I’ve since added the Airglas nose fork and have a standard 8.50x6 on the nose. Yes, it sits higher up front, but that’s the point, right? Get the prop up out of the gravel.

It’s more of a challenge to land it mains first without touching the nose wheel, but it can be done. I guess if it kisses the dirt on landing, that’s ok, too. The prop is still up further out of harms way.

That’s interesting. It must be the width if run at low pressure. Those tires really aren’t that big in diameter. Did they say where the “fit” issue was?

No, just that they've had complaints with them not fitting so they recommended not ordering one.
