Discovery Channel and the Gravel Bar Cowboys
A general forum for anything related to flying the backcountry. Please check first if your new topic fits better into a more specific forum before posting.
A couple of weeks ago the Discovery Channel contacted us about doing a short video about us going out and playing on the gravel bars of the Fraser River. They filmed from 8 am till 5 pm and they used about 10 minutes on a show called Daily Planet. Not much air time but it was all positive and they said if we are doing something different to call them. There was 16 planes that showed up with only 12hrs notice which was really good. There were 4 local BCP guys attending. They aired the segment on march 23 locally. They also have it on line.
If you are interested in seeing it follow this link. Go just below the picture of the two people and select march 23 then click on the play arrow located by the ladies arm. It is the full show so you have to put up with the advertising but we are the first session.

Great video!
I'd love to hear more about that radial powered bird!
Are small watermelon sized rocks the same as baby head sized rocks?

Is that a bearhawk with the 4 bladed prop? What kind of prop is that? It looks like the blades aren't spaced evenly, is that the way it actually is or does it just look that way?

I will find out more about Simon's plane, he is hangered real close to me.
Small watermelon size and baby head size all same it is also like fishing stories. The more times the story is told the bigger everything gets.
That is a very different 4 blade prop. When Darcy made the cam change and some head work the 3 blade would not hold the power on static run up. Ron at Ivo Prop said they had been working on a new radical 4 blade set up and they thought this would be the perfect application for it and it is. The front blade is 84" and the back blade is 80" dia. The front blade has less pitch than the back one. Basically the front blade feeds the back blade and this setup kicks butt big time. We just call it the railroad crossing prop. We keep threatening to paint it white and put a big RAILROAD CROSSING decal on it
