To send someone who is not a friend a PM, click the PM icon under their username on their post, or visit their profile and click "send message."

Sounds like you've already made the right decision, but just to reinforce that notion: XP hasn't been supported by Microsoft for over four years now and is thus an increasingly risky place to be.
