DSLR Video/Still Remote Control Solution

I have been planning on selling my Nikon D80 rig for a while to upgrade to the new D7000 so I can do some really pro-quality 1080p video (editing is another matter). I want to be able to get the type of quality seen in Steve Wrights videos (http://vimeo.com/15106849), but but was wondering how I was going to practically control the camera in flight (as it will be mounted out on the strut).

Oh, there's and app for that. Sort of.

On 1 sells an app DSLR Remote Control http://www.ononesoftware.com/products/dslr-camera-remote/. $19.99 + 9.99 for video capability.

I say sort of, as the camera still has to be connected to a computer and the computer needs to be running the server software (free) and connected to a wifi network.

So the plan (untested) is to run a long USB cable down the strut into the cockpit, and connect to my laptop (small form factor dell) running the server software and strapped in the backseat/baggage area.

I have a Mifi Wireless modem that functions as a portable wifi network "hotspot generator" that will be running off 12V DC, creating a wifi hotspot for the computer and iphone to connect to so the whole thing can function.

Viola!

The software allows you to control most of the vital functions of the camera, including switching back and fort between video/live view and still. You can even program a set number of high speed (6 frams/sec) still bursts. Focus mode, program mode, etc, etc.

My laptop battery is great, so it can run for 3hrs or so on a full charge. We'll have to see how well the camera battery lasts in live view mode, but I am sure it will last long enough for camera hops, then I can change it out. The Mifi and phone are charged off my panel.

Here is a test - now if I can just figure out focus mode. Likely I will f-stop down so the depth of field is very deep and the camera won't go nuts focusing.

Now I just have to figure out a strut mount. Probably fabricating my own out of fiberglass

Somebody else on the site mentioned this strut cam mount

I ordered without waiting to see whether there will be a BCP discount. I'm happy with it.
