Dudes in a R-22 rescue RC plane from a treetop

...to the amazement of the RC flyers...an aviation publicity win. CFI seems pretty pleased with his aid provided...haha.

You can't make stuff like that up, no one would believe it! The soundtrack commentary was priceless.

I wonder why privately flow helos have such a high fatality rate?

It's hard enough to fly a helicopter, but Its got to be even harder while smoking a cigarette! ;-)

Without reading the article, here's my take on your comment.

I'm sure you've heard about the reputation that the Bonanza has being the "Doctor Killer", well privately flown helicopters are flown by the same people. Folks with lots of money, and, most of the time, not a lot of experience. Helicopters don't suffer fools well, and often due to the nature of the beast, a crash will result in a fatality.

Without knowing the experience level of the CFI, I won't speculate on his flying ability other than to mention that he probably flies 10-20X more hours per month than most private owner pilots. From what I could tell in the video, he did everything right (carb heat in, and aware of where his tailrotor was). Some might view this as being a bit of a cowboy, and as far as the duties of a CFI go, I might agree...but the reality is, this is what helicopters do and do well, as long as you KNOW what your doing and how to do it safely....just like some people think you're crazy for landing an airplane on anything but a paved runway...

Re: Dudes in a R-22 rescue RC plane from a treetop

I'm scared shitless to fly in a helicopter of any kind (of coarse, except for a LifeFlight). But I think JoeCub is about the only person I'd trust to go for a short flight in a helo. And he's a fairly new helo pilot. How long have you had the Enstream, Joe? And I still hadn't gotten enough nerve to go for a flight? :D :D

On the other hand, I believe the Bell 206 Jet Ranger has the best safety record of any single engine aircraft flying.

Another way to burn stacks of money in helo:

at least you have a frosty one waiting for you when you're done. Judging by the size of the "skidcam", they've been doing this for quite a long time. :D

Looks like other folks have time on their hands too. This was on reddit in response to the video:

No control tower... and not a single mid air collision (that wasn't intended...)
How can they possibly be allowed to do all this hovering without government approval?
And those Texans... they aren't dudes... They be good ol' boys..

Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.
