Dumb Question about Radio License
Owning an aircraft has many special considerations like financing, taxes, inspections, registration, and even partnerships. You can post questions on buying and selling procedure. Please post type-specific questions and topics in the
Types forum.

I just purchased my first plane. In my reading, it seems that an aircraft Radio Station License is non transferrable. The title people registered my plane with the FAA and I am awaiting paperwork from them.
Do I need to apply for the Radio Station License separate from the aircraft registration.
Thanks for not laughing at me and for any help you can offer.

Hi Doc,
No radio license is necessary. Welcome to airplane ownership!

Thanks very much for the quick response.
In my checkride prep material, they mention that a radio license must be presented with the other aircraft documents. Is this old information?
Thanks again!

Hi Doc,
I think they dropped the requirement for a license back in the 80's if my memory serves me right. So, yeah, the information is old.

If you fly outside the US the radio station and your personal radio licenses are both still required.

Believe you still need the radio operators license to fly international: Canada, Mexico, etc.
Still carry my old one - just in case.

The radio station license is an ICAO requirement, not enforced in the US.
I've never heard of anyone being asked for a radio station license in Canada. I suspect, however, that it's one of those things that if nothing bad happens, nothing bad will happen if you don't have a radio station license. On the other hand, if something WERE to happen.....who knows. Kind of like insurance coverage in Canada. I've never been asked to see proof of insurance, but.....

Just cleared into Canada at Penticton (CYYF) and all they wanted was Pilot license, Medical Certificate, Passport, and types of weapons.
And if you had weapon(s), they wanted $25 (permit was good for 60 days).
Nice Customs folks there.

I still have my restricted radio operators license issued back in 1970, and I think I got one for this POS airplane I have now, when I bought it in 2006 because I was taking it back north to AK. I'm gonna have to look to see if it's there. I have never been asked to show either.

I have never been asked for a radio license in Canada or Mexico. More than 200 border crossings. BUT, I have one.

Thanks to everyone for the info. I'm glad to know that I can cross that chore off the list.

I have questions to, I am planning on traveling to northern Idaho and Washington, I have been entertaining the thought of spending some time in Canada, I have an international registration for the radios and passports, is Canada enforcing the new ELT rules or can I get by with my old 121.5 ELT ? What else might I need?
