DVD to Mpeg converter

Hey guys,
Trying to figure out how to get my dvds to mpeg. I've found a couple of converters that do the job, but when I try to use Windows Movie Maker, one message I get is that my computer doesn't have the correct "codec" loaded. As a result I can't put the clip into WMM. So what do you guys use? My file type is .ifo and I'm guessing the best is to convert it to mpeg? I know a lot of you are more savvy than me regarding this.
Thanks,
GSP

Handbrake. It's free and it's good.

Corey,
I have been messing around with muvee and vegas. They have free trial downloads. I dont know a dang thing about any of this, but they seemed to take capture our video ok. I'll try to email you some footage this evening. You too, Steve. I'm working on a video for the potluck.

Thanks Mark. I'll try out the one Zane sent me and let you know how I like it. I probably won't have time to get really into it until I go back to work tomorrow.

Hey Zane,
Windows Movie Maker tells me that MP4 isn't a supported file type. Looks like I have to have it in Mpeg or MP3. Is there a work around or do I have to find a different converter? Man this can be frustrating to us less who are a little less savvy.
Mark,
Could you describe your process briefly? Are you starting with .ifo and converting it to ???

I'd say find a real editor that can handle common video types. I've heard good things about Vegas. Another free open-source alternative is Virtualdub, but it's not nearly as polished.

I got Handbrake to work with Windows Movie Maker. I just had to tinker with it a little and get the combination right.
Mark,
If you decide to use this, I got it to work by using .avi format with the codec set to M-PEG4 (XviD). I used the Normal preset from the right column and it worked.
Hopefully now I can play with this and get something put together. Thanks for the help.
