Earthx mounting box, thermal protection model required?
Avionics, airplane covers, tires, handheld radios, GPS receivers, wireless Wx uplink...any product related to backcountry aircraft and flying.

I’m looking at replacing an Odyssey battery with an EarthX, and have a question about the boxes.
I understand the Earthx won’t fit into my Odyssey box. So the choices on Earthx’s website are stock ($59), and thermal protection ($115). Both look as though we can use the same holes in the firewall.
How hot does it get on the firewall of a 180? The EarthX temperature limit is 140F. I looked up the Odyssey, and it’s limit is 113F.
Intuitively; since the limit is lower on the Odyssey, I’ve never seen a thermally protected Odyssey box, and mine has been there on the firewall for about 8 years the thermal protection is not necessary.
Does anyone have any advice on this, or the EarthX in general?

What are you going to use for a basis for approval? My understanding is that these batteries are not recommended for mounting in the cabin of a plane unless they're vented....not sure what that implies, but.....I'm sticking with my Odyssey till there's a lot more operational history on the Earth X batteries. They do sound good, but.....

And the operational history knowledge bank is growing. I'll report back if we follow through with it, this spring at annual time.

My take on his post is that it would be mounted on the engine side of the firewall,
as that's where most FW-mounted Odysseys are located.

Experimental builders have been using them for years. Anyone heard of any actualized safety issues?
The data is out there as they sell a lot of batteries for aircraft.

They now have a TSO'd version of their battery. Still working on STCs however... But meeting TSO should help in that process, and maybe even with getting field approvals?

Okay, but as the OP noted, the company offers two different mounts......since this isn’t FAA approved, why is that?

OP here. After some research, the switch simply wasn’t worth the 10ish pounds.
-Mounting a new box(or perhaps modifying the existing box),
-Installing a warning light in the panel
-Field approval hassle
-$700 for the battery
Or, order a new Odyssey for $185, and install it in 10 minutes.
Cranks our Pponk just fine
