Easy strips in Oregon, Nevada and Idaho

Towards the end of the month Snoopydoc and I are heading off for a few days of flying. We were going to poke around Oregon, then head over to Idaho to see friends in the McCall / Garden Valley area.

We're looking for airstrip recommendations along the way...nothing too difficult (relative, I know), but out of the way. I guess by "easy" I mean a strip that an average pilot who's paying attention can get in and out of without needing specific instruction.

Soldier Meadows and the Owyhee Reservoir are on the list, and Hells Canyon seems like it might be a good spot to land. I'm guessing the Idaho high country is still socked in.

We'll be in a 180hp 170, but with camping gear we'll need to mind where we go into. We're completely self contained...water is about the only thing we would like to have on site.

If anyone knows of a place worth visiting, let me know.
thanks,

On your way between Soldier Meadows and the Owahee, be sure to stop at the Alvord Desert if you don't do a few touch and goes on the Black Rock Desert.

If you get over in NE Oregon give me a call or PM me before with a day you might be in the area and I'll give you a mini tour of Red's and a strip or two in Hell's Canyon....If I'm not on my spring bear hunt that is when you're coming thru.. :)

Enjoy your sojourn....

There will be a group of pilots at the Owyhee strip over Memorial day some are getting there as early as Wed. or Thurs. I plan to get down on Sat. I don't know if I will be there other than that.
I think someone said that Johnson Creek is open. They have a webcam there. JOHNSON CREEK AIRPORT WEBCAM. You can look and see if there is any traffic. It is the premere camping spot in the back country and isn't all that difficult. 4900' MSL big grass runway 3500' in length . land to the South Takkeoff to the North. Bob

Re: Easy Strips in Idaho

Big Bar in Hells Canyon has just been cleaned up, Pittsburg Landing is also easy, Johnson Creek (3U2) is fine, and Moose Creek (1U1) will be fine, it's only 2600 ft Elev. Anything above 5000 or so might still be a little soggy, although we are in a heat wave right now and things are drying out rapidly. If it stays dry Chamberlain should be OK by the end of the month. Big Creek should be dry by then, too. It's really nice with a good CG and the Lodge for breakfast.

Have a great trip!

Flying North to WASH>ORE> IDAHO etc.

Middle of next month (Fathers day) I'm going to Columbia ,CA, for pancake breakfast then north to Tim Avery's new Strip. Probably go thru centeral Oregon enroute to Walla Walla,WA. Then on east to the Idaho Back country strips (anyone fished around Cabin Creek ?) and on on east to Helena ,MT. Then on to Central Kansas for mini-family reunion. Anyone know of places in central Oregon area where we can camp and enjoy the fresh air . Thanks Bill Reid ie 182 STOL Driver

Owyhee State is not too far out of the way (well, might be to some) to Walla Walla. Yes, I bought the Landis kit this last Jan. And I do believe I have the single puck brakes. So far it works great. However, I have not done too much backcountry flying yet. I've been in and out of Oh Shit North and Oh Shit South, south of the Owyhee State Res. Airstrip with no problems. Pat
