Re: elec problems

check for any loose screw terminals or crimp-on wire terminals on the amp meter, fuses/circuit breakers, ballast resistor for the amp meter if you have one, regulator, alternator, master switch, ground buss if you have one, or any other wiring related to charging. It also could be a bad master switch, or amp meter if you have a meter without an external ballast resistor. throwing parts at it until the problem goes away gets expensive very fast.

Re: elec problems

Agree with Dale, seemingly tight connections need to be double checked. Corroded cables that are becoming intermittent are another hidden culprit. Relays are a witch to check until they actually break.

Re: elec problems

Get yourself a meter and pick several places to check the voltage. Fly around and eliminate the connections by moving downstream on the circuit looking for changes in the meter, move downstream until you get the flicker on it as well. Guessing your 182 isn't new, circuit breakers get corrosion fuzz on them and the split switches like to fail as well. Also, check on the amp meter itself. Power comes through the firewall to the amp meter on one lug, then out the amp meter on another lug to the bus. The amp meter shunt is literally a small piece of bent metal that gives a small millivolt reading that varies depending on current passing through the shunt. They do break!

Re: elec problems

If you still have one of the old Ford style mechanical regulators ya might try putting in one of the newer solid state ones. That fixed it for me.

Have you tried shutting off one item at a time to see if it goes away. Xponder, Radio, turn coordinator, etc., down to the master switch etc. That just might help to isolate a cause.

Does it happen at all engine speeds?

Most electrical problems I have had seem to come from bad ground connections and poorly crimped lugs.

Re: elec problems

Look at it like this, Amp meter flickers, then you lose all electrics, flaps, radios, in other words you lost all electrical, was the battery dead? If not, why didn’t the system run off the battery?
Have you ever attempted to start the aircraft with a dead battery and chattered the relays? Doing so will destroy the contacts in a relay in short order and may cause intermittent operation.
1. Check all battery connections, check each end on both cables
2. Check master relay, check connections, it may also be failing intermittently, causing the flicker
3. Check the power cable and connection points,
4. Check the amp meter and connection to buss.
If the battery was dead, then,

1. Loose alt belt, Bad alternator connections
2. Bad alternator or voltage reg.
3. Voltage regulator may have turned off alternator on overvoltage if master relay was intermittent or connections to are intermittent battery.
