Wonder how great the tower coverage is mid-Atlantic??

I guess for 1.20 a minute you may get to find out

Heck, we just finally had ice-go. #-o Good thing about a cooold winter and slow spring is that the Alaska state bird (mosquito) is not out yet. BTW it snowed in Unalakleet yesterday, winter isn't quite through.

Good trout fishing, got a few, but we don't get serious until the silvers run in August =D> .

Re: Electrical gear on takeoff and landing

I've had the ditditdit interference from a cell phone drown out ATC on the radio and had to ask for a repeat. Not cool in busy Bravo space.

Re: Electrical gear on takeoff and landing

Gulpstream has done extensive testing and it doesn't effect anything.
Personally, I prefer the rules the way they are.
I'm still tempted to shove the cellphones up the ass of those that use them when allowed on Commercial flights.
I have my phone on when flying one of those "Fly by Wire" pieces of shit.
Cell phones "on" don't make them fly any worse than they do cell free.
The flying public shouldn't be concerned with cellphone interference, they should really be concerned with Fly by Wire... Period!

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to tell it like it is!

Re: Electrical gear on takeoff and landing

Okay okay I have the answer!!!

The reason he must have turned to you and asked if you had it off is because when they are sending or receiving a message or trying to locate service it can make an really annoying sound in the headsets! When flying on the C-17 we always knew when a crewmember or passenger had a cell phone on because of the interference it caused in the communications. It can be very loud and distracting. There ya go! :)

Re: Electrical gear on takeoff and landing

In my plane every time my cell phone changes cell sites I here a noise for about 3 seconds in the headsets, it blocks out anything else on the radio, and there is no way of predicting when it will change cell sites. If the cell phone is on the left side of the plane it will also cause the GPS to loose signal for about 5-7 seconds as well, but not if the phone is more than 2 feet from the GPS. The bottom line is the FAA has banned electric devices because you can not prove that they will NOT cause interference. saying it didn't cause interference today is NOT proof that it will not interfere tomorrow.

Yep, stuff a suitcase with a scanner, put it in overhead baggage and confirm what we all already know. There are people that forget to shut devices off, and others that ignore the rules.

It is good report for coming up to speed on what the concerns are. Nothing definitive, but the takeaway I get is, legalize/popularize the use of PED's, and this will increase the likelyhood of an incident. As far as "huge amount of data reported" that is not what we would expect. The probability of RF emmission interefering with the safety of flight is very low for a variety of reasons, so even if electronic devices were allowed, there wouldn't be much to report, but... and this is a big one. If you or someone you care about is on that one deadly flight, even after millions of safe flights, was allowing PED's worth it?

Re: Electrical gear on takeoff and landing

One of the early stories floating around said the FCC banned cell phones because in the early days there were only a limited number of towers. On the road your suitcase sized phone would only be in range of one or two towers at any time, but once airborne the line of sight limitation went out the window and meant that a phone was be in touch with more towers. Even though you only used one at a time just being in touch meant less bandwidth for everybody else and in the early days there wasn't much excess bandwidth available per tower.

Good one, except he had not started up or put on the headphones. It was a fairly new pilot giving the usual brief, we just don't get the "turn off your cell phone" part out in the bush #-o

Good comments.
I guess i started this thread not to bash not being able to use PED's in flight or that because there is no hard evidence the rule should be overturned. Personally, it amazes me that people cannot or will not live without them even for the short time they are on a flight  and i hate it when i'm trying to talk to someone but they are busy texting someone else.

i was just looking for the WHY.
i think in the end, Dale has the closest answer:

Re: Electrical gear on takeoff and landing

Just a regulatory thing, don't sweat it. Like you I'd find it pretty strange for a bush operation to get their knickers in a knot over it, but whatever - must be an aspiring airline pilot. In your own plane do whatever you want. On a commercial flight, at least turn the ringer off. I flew EMS for years and everybody on board (pilots, paramedics, doctors, patients) had a cel phone on and used it constantly. Never saw anything twitch. Emirates Airlines says use a cel phone anytime you want, I don't see them crashing every second day.

I was involved in testing iPads for EFB use (STC application) and went through the full test program of radio interference with the WiFi turned on and off. No difference, no problem. AA uses iPads in the cockpit during approach and landing, no problem.

I use my iPhone for nav, velcro'd to the dash. I don't bother putting it in airplane mode. Why would I? That would turn off the GPS and not give me real-time access to current METARS. Also couldn't text in a position report to my loved ones when I pass over a town.

Of course I would never counsel anyone to break an regulation.....
