Anybody been to Elk City, ID, lately? Is there a place for breakfast or lunch in town? Considering stopping there in about a week.

Good spot. Head down the hill to town make a left and you will find the restaurant.

My 1st choice is now Mackay Bar. 5 star. 2nd Flying B, 3rd Sulfur Creek. 4th Elk City.

I here Elk River is very good.

Have you been before? My information is more than a couple years old but there was the ubiquitous Rocky Mountains mountain bar/pizza place on Main St. I think it was the Reno Club (?) then there is the Elk Creek Cafe and Grocery which was open for breakfast and lunch. Both next to each other. Even if the names have changed I'm sure they are still there in some form. The place southwest of the airport a few hundred yards on 14 that served pretty fair food for dinner (bbq and other good stuff) closed.

I can not find the phone number right now, but there is a restaurant at the small town of Dixie Idaho.
Maybe someone else will have the phone number.
If I run across it I will post it.

It is just up stream a few miles north and east from Dixie Forest Service.
It does not show on the chart, but it is there. Approach is similar to landing Dixie Forrest to the north / upstream.
Just do not land too short if it looks dark and damp on the low / approach end.
Lots of run out room, and it is uphill to the north.

Then you just follow a ridge line north to Elk City.

In Dixie, its the Silver Spur - 208-842-2417. Sometimes on Tues or Weds, they go into town for supplies and they are closed, but a call will answer that question. Its always better to call ahead, but we have always had success there on weekends, without notice. Huckleberries are in season around Dixie, and had huckleberry pancakes there last week.

Mackay Bar would really like an email or call. They are sometimes shut down for a boat run into town for supplies during the week too. If you do call and give a time, be on time or give them a later time than you think, because they plan on the time you give them.

The runway has an interesting dogleg in it.

The Elk City dog leg turns out to be a non-event.
Lots of room beyond it and it is uphill.
"They" were digging a ditch across the dog leg on my first time there.
Of course you can always approach as if you were going to use it if you wish.
Approaching on the left side sorta straightens it out.
I have seen ultralights being assembled on the lower dog leg section.

Elk City is an easy strip to land at. The dogleg is gentle and there is plenty of room before and after it. There is a good breakfast restaurant in town which is a short walk just down the hill. Turn left at the bottom of the hill on the main road and the restaurant is on the left. The caretaker at the airport is a nice fellow and very helpful. He may even give you a ride to the restaurant!

To add to the breakfast list. Elk River also has good huck pancakes. Just northwest a few miles of Elk City.

Yep...I have been there...YIKES!!!! what am I saying....I am here....all the time. The airport is in great shape...two camping spots mid field...and with the right attitude there is a hot shower available at the hanger. Landing 14 (uphill) takeoff 35...caution deer/turkeys on the runway. We do have a good cafe in town thats open 6am to 9pm every day......The "Murphy" Mooseman 208-842-9220

My wife, little boy and I were there during the BCP fly-in. The instructions above were right on. On short final I was surprised to be greated by a very nice man, Curtis, that informed me that he had just mowed the runway. My little boy loved his dogs and he let us take one of his quads down to the restaurant. Like noted above, he told me that with the right attitude, he has made quite the pilot lounge that he graciously offered for our use. Mooseman, if that is you, thank you again for the hospitality. It was a pleasure to have met you. Strip was in great shape and easily managable.

Nice to meet cha, and a big thanks for your hospitality. Hopefully you will bring that Mighty Moose to Colo. sometime so I can return the hospitality.

The restaurant down the hill is very good, and the deal on ice cream there is the best in the backcountry, period.
