EMAG cleaning caution

A note of caution regarding cleaning EMAGS - We had an oil leak today and used engine degreaser to clean the engine compartment -
but afterwards the EMAG was U/S (the other mag was standard type and fine). A call to EMAG support, explained what we did and first question was "did you use degreaser?". Apparently the EMAG is not a completely sealed unit and the circuit boards have a conformal coating to ensure water and oil isn't a problem in case either come in contact with the board. However degreaser has a solvent that can eat through the coating and into the board. Rather insidious as it can happen over time if a film of degreaser remains on the board so a problem can show up later - long after a test flight. So today 1 step forward and 1 back - but will get PMAG upgrade to internal power so not a complete loss. I think the case could be designed to have the air/drain passage oriented down to prevent direct ingress of anything or at least a warning sticker (NO DEGREASER!).

Wow, good to know. Thanks.

Are you running single EMAG and single magneto for redundancy? Why not 2 E/PMAGs?

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Re: EMAG cleaning caution

The aircraft builder wanted a bush plane that he could hand prop and get home even with dead battery&alternator so as well as one conventional mag he also plumbed primer lines on the IO-360. The P-Mag (which I'll upgrade to ) seems to answer part of that at least in the air with its internal power supply. Not sure if it is easier to hand prop with a standard mag or an EMAG....not too keen to try it with 3 blades.....
