Great job!!! That crosswind looks like it really helped. I'm assuming they had the aircrane standing by with a load in case of a fire, good idea!! Can't train for that stuff...pure skills

Easy there, Skytruck. Those DHL guys flying the Airbus 300 out of Baghdad did a pretty good job too.

Was that an A26 dressed up as a firebomber, a la "Always"? Real nice control. Would have been a good landing in that crosswind even with all three wheels dangling.

If it was a "Real" airplane there wouldn't have been all the drama. Head for the airport and land!
Real airplanes don't need computers to run the flight controls!
There would be a direct connection between the pilots and the control surface.
Ask those Airbus pilots what they would rather fly, that thing or a 767! That's of course, if they haven't become drunk on the CoolAide.
The last thing I want to deal with when the shit hits the fan, is a Microsoft-ish operation system :)
Boeing is in for a lesson now that they have the 787 (BoeBus).

BTW, I speak with a knowledge of FBW.

Good piloting in both of these situations!! I just hope IF and WHEN the time may come that my excrement and I are up against IT that I have the the where-with-all to do as these guys have done! Souix City, IA and the Hudson River also come to mind.

I was wondering about the direction they landed...cross wind from the right? I can't tell by the wind sock what degree the cross wind is...ie maybee there would be a tail wind component landing the other direction. Did the right cross wind help reduce the left turning when the wing touched the ground by a weather vane effect to the right? It does have a big tail.

I wonder if the sky crane would have dropped water on a fire or hovered down low and blow it out.

Re: Emergency Landing of a P2V at Minden-Tahoe

I was on the ramp and saw it all. Left gear up, landed 16 with wind 240 at 10+ (roughly). I was thinking he'd have been better off landing 34, at least in terms of being able to keep his left wing up longer. But, had he done that he would have ground looped towards the ramp - not so good, so all in all they made the right call.

As it was, one of SoaringNV's gliders had been sitting out on the runway 30 glider staging area right were he came to a stop. Fortunately, they had run out and pulled the glider back to the main ramp right before they closed the airport for the landing, or it would have been crushed like a bug.

Not sure I understand your logic.....With right crosswind he was able to hold the left wing up in the slip until it stalled, then the right xwind acting on the rudder helps counteract the groundloop when the blades/nacelle/wingtip touch. Landing the other way he'd have been left wing low, contacting the runway with the parts that are supposed to be in the air, at a higher speed. Add on top also having the wind push the tail around into the groundloop for good measure.

I'd say he judged it correct, regardless of which side the ramp was on.
