Stuffed probes / damaged wiring? The thermocouple wires are different to regular wires and might have been damaged? Rodents are good at that in storage.

Maybe swap the sensors with the ones next door (if your able) and see if the reading stays with the sensors or the cylinder.

Re: Engine monitor reading..you guess!

Usually the sensor side is crimped at the factory, with the gauge side being cut to length and the connector crimped on. They do fall off or just get loose from not so good crimps. Most of the manufacturers suggest you give a little more crimp after 50-100 hours. I'd start there. After that I would look to the connector at the instrument. Those pins may have pushed out, or the wires may have come loose from the pins.

Re: Engine monitor reading..you guess!

Thermocouples do go TU, but two at the same time, on the same cyl. Seems a unlikely bet. I agree with akt. That cyl is firing lean at low rpm, and not at all at high. I am betting on an injector

BTW, to anyone who doesn't think multi cyl engine instruments are worth the money on big engines I'd say this is a good example of why they are...

Good luck with it! Take care, Rob

Yup, pull the injector and ultrasonic clean it. You should be able to see what's blocking it, often a piece of filter medium or a hair. High EGT at low rpm and cool EGT/CHT at high are the giveaway. You should also see a higher fuel flow than normal on the factory gauge. The JPI's are a neat piece of kit, should be able to see all this if you download the data

I do like the 42" MAP redline! :D

You guys are good.

Injector it was...small piece of something in it and I had no idea my almost new engine was struggling this bad.

Rob you hit the nail on the head.

Re: Engine monitor reading..you guess!

Bkn4thr,

Love the planes in your signature line!

You didn't say why your tach wasn't up, but just thought I'd add a bit from my experiences with the jpi 730/830. It is a great box for the money BTW. My experience has been that if the instrument is not fully booted and you start the engine (say you just fueled and are repositning) this will confuse the tach, and it will not always boot up. The instrument really needs to be fully booted and running before the engine is.

Don't know if that was your case, but something to be wary of anyways.

Take care, Rob

Re: Engine monitor reading..you guess!

More gas...or some would be good. So many things to play with I didn't get to add gas or set the red lines.
I guess I was preoccupied with the fact my engine was only running on five!

I'm working on the tach issue, my mechanic was down today and we got it to read but it's way off...at 900 rpm on my gauge the edm is reading 1500. I sat on hold for an hour at jpi and listened to a nice message that my call would be answered in one minute. According to all the manuals we have the right parts for the model of mags I got but something is out for sure.

Realy think this will be a great tool as its probably already saved me a cylinder.

Re: Engine monitor reading..you guess!

Check how the probes attach. On our T206H, the engine monitor probe piggy-backs on the #5 cylinder stock probe through some sort of adapter. It routinely reads different than the other cylinders, usually lower, but I have seen the opposite as well. With over 12,000 hours on one of our 2001 models, we have gone through many probes, some bad right out of the box. Good luck

Re: Engine monitor reading..you guess!

Bkn,

A couple things to check on the 830 tach;

Under the settings Fac/Lim>Cyl, double check you're on 6. The same unit can be on 4,6,8 or 12.
Also, if you a running slicks, there are two caps that the probe fits, you want the vent plug. It's quick and easy to switch plugs to check it out.

Good luck!

Re: Engine monitor reading..you guess!

Sat in my airplane and did some programming today. Rpm fixed, just the cyl setting like you said Rob. Thanks. I got fuel now too and redlines appropriate to my engine. Realy going to like this gadget I'm sure.
