Everglads in Winter
A general forum for anything related to flying the backcountry. Please check first if your new topic fits better into a more specific forum before posting.
This is the best time to take a backcountry trip to the Everglads and since I have been invited to a private grass strip out there I will be going on an adventure. The plan is to hook up in Sebring Florida on 2/7/09 at noon and fly-in to the strip then drop gear and go play locally that afternoon. Camp overnight and head home on Sunday whenever ya feel like it. The strip is ruff but 75x1400 with trees at the north end and about 200ft of scrub on the the south approach. Our host has a cabin with bath and shower if needed. Anyone interested let me know.

If your not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.
I certainly wish you better vis than the last two times i tried to get down there. First was fog and smoke and the second was during a cold snap. All the burning cane had the ceiiling low and vis was for the birds.
I would get a smoke report before you go. I got tired of even breathing the crap. Both times it was light North and blue sky if you could see it above the pall.

BTW, don't know about gas at Sebring, but gas at Pahokee was $2.80 a couple days ago.

Tom,
Her glades spot looks a bit much for my itty bitty amphib wheels. I come and go to Crescent Lake and fuel at Flagler. I'll move your post and perhaps next time up we can meet.

I hope the smoke will be gone. It is getting close to planting being over so we can keep an eye on it. I will try to insert the map for the location. I think I got it.

I talked to Robin (the host) today and he is heading down Thursday to mow and make sure we have plenty of tie down room. He is planning a cook out for Saturday afternoon for everyone that can make it. So far I have 2 Highlanders, 2 Kitfox, a 170B and a Sport Cub. Wasn't there a Husky driver at X61 that wanted to go flying? Only 3 will be overnight so far....the rest are local.

Hope you all have a great weekend flying out of the Big Cypress! Wish I could be there with you...... make sure you get a taste of some of that swamp cabbage and be sure to ask the locals about a man named Ronnie Bergeron sure to strike up some good stories around the campfire.
