Experimental bush plane with an 0-320

I want to build another airplane and would like some sugestions on what to build.

This is what I want:
two seats
STOL
taildragger
good on skis
somewhat aerobatic

I am pulling a complete, first run O-320 out of my 172. I would like to rebuild and use it for this project.

I feel that the wag-aero acro sportsman (clipped wing cub replica) or a acro-sport II biplane would best fit all these requirements. Are there any others I should consider?

Thanks,
Nick

I like this idea. Find an older 7GCBC and give it a new life.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Look at the Piper Pacer PA-20 or a PA-22/20 Pacer. They're very cheap and there's many bush mods for them. Check out Trimmer aviation in Willow Alaska. You can even put your 0-320 right in.

You CANNOT just take a production airplane, bolt a set of wings from another production airplane on it, an engine from yet another, and put it in the Amatuer Homebuilt Experimental category. You could perhaps put it in the Airshow Experimental category, but that is a VERY restrictive category, and undesirable.

There is a thing called the 51 % rule, which is undergoing revision or review right now, that essentially requires that to put an airplane in the Amateur Homebuilt category requires that you build at least half the plane. There's a lot more to it than that, but again, the point is, you cannot go into this category by just modifying a certified airplane, unless you fabricate half of it new. No erector set homebuilding, in other words.

:D Thank you for all the ideas.

I really don't need a serious STOL bush aircraft. Just need to be able to get in and out of my grass strip in the winter when there is snow on the ground and in the spring when it is wet. Its 1900 feet at elev 1717.

I like Citabria's but I can build one in the 51% experimetal class. Is the Bearhawk Patrol design based on a Ctabria?

No certifieds.I like the freedom to do as I please. If I want to put big, fat ,farm, flotation tires on my airplane I can. It my butt in the seat, so I should decide what is safe. I don't want to have to to get approval from some pinhead that is counting his days to retirement and trying to protect his pension. As a DOT contractor I have cut enough red tape. Don't want to offend anyone but that is where I stand.

About ten years ago I bought the plan for a Pegasair but never built one. It is a cool little airplane but not really acrobatic with the high lift wing slats

The Sportsman 2+2 is a great airplane, but out of my budget. I just need a fun plain jane two seat VFR airplane. I'm going to keep the 172 for traveling with my family and flying in the weather.

Maulewaco, I like the way you think. I have always in the past bought and complete other peoples abandoned projects. You usually can pick them up for less than 50 cents on the dollar and they save you a ton of work. A 200mph acrobatic spam can is not a bad idea. I sure they could be fitted with skis.

Well just make a 7KCAB of your choice -Add scout gear (STC) wings(STC)
and engine /prop(STC) and you have a Citrabra with Scout modification.
I can buy a metal wing kit for about 6 grand ,engine and prop for under
15 grand. Gear can be exchanged (8KCBA is taller) for 2grand. With the cost of buying my7KCAB you'd have a scout for under 30 k .or a Citirbra for 20k. Fuselage /tail with all the stuff is done in ceconite up to silver . Wings need spars or change out but complete. Cowls, doors, Tailwheel , Cleavland wheels and brakes, Main gear etc. here.

Six thousand is what we have in the project and will take that or really near. Aircraft project is located in Los Angeles area -trailer avaiable .
Full clear title N6300N . I was planning on putting it togethor for fun but
other forces (wife-family) demanded that I get going and sell it. Nice project with NO Damage (other than wings that need new spars) and putting it together.

Bill,

Interesting--there's an stc which allows installation of Scout wings on a 7KCAB?? I could see a Decathlon wing, as in no flaps...

My point was, as he's stated a couple times, he's only interested in experimental.

I don’t know how you’d make it experimental, but I have:

A complete Scout 8GCBC.

The fuselage is newly recovered and ready for final color. (next week, it should be yellow). Wings are untouched so far. O-360 180 hp around 1500 SMOH. Big long sea plane prop. New glass, almost new interior, Older nav-com, Xponder, etc. Has the new factory rear baggage door installed. Double puck brakes, 8.50’s.

make me an offer, I am getting tired,

Hello Folks,
1st timer here. Nice to meet you all.

Swingwing's list reads like mine if you'd add floats....and a chute and the new amsafe airbag belts.

I like the Wag Aero J-3 too.
I wonder how feasible would buying both the clip and long wings with the acro fuselage would be.
Change the plane around according to mission.
Clip wing, little wheels for Ahhkro. Long wing and floats/skis/bigger tires for adventuring.

I have no idea what the regs might have to say about this approach.
Can you legally reconfig and fly a multi-configurable ac without doing a full dog and pony papershow everytime you change on a proven design like the Wag (J-3)? I know you'd log the changes, but would there be any other requirements?
I'm really fuzzy on the slsa/elsa/etclsa distinctions.

What experience I have is mostly part135. Y'know, file a 337 and a cg for changing the toilet paper holder in the head. Roots of my attraction for LSA.

Oh, if I can go really hog wild, add decathalon type spades for akro.

And try some katmai type canards for boonyhopping. Should make it climb like a balloon. Also removable for akro, I don't think you could manage a competition spin with them on.

Did I mention vortex generators?

Nobody mentioned the RV6 or 4, other than getting your seat messy every time you have mud on your feet it does it all. You can even take a sleeping bag with you as long as it is very warm outside!!GT

Re: Experimental bush plane with an 0-320

The bearhawk Patrol is a ground up design based on the 4 place Bearhawk. It has elements from many different aircraft.

The wings are all aluminum with a structure similar to the RV series, but with 180 sf of wing area (same as a super cub, more than a Citabria). The flaps and ailerons both have very wide cords, 20 inches for the flaps, which are 9 ft long each giving twice the area of a Cub's flaps. The airfoil is a modern Riblett 13-1/2% high lift design.

The fuselage and tail are a conventional welded tube and fabric design. It uses a full box structure similar to a Stinson. It's designed for up to 200hp, the prototype originally used an O-360, but is now testing an O-390. With the O-360 and no electrical system the prototype was 1025lbs empty with 6 quarts of oil, so it should perform very well on an O-320. Gross is 2000lbs and it has 55gals of fuel capacity. The landing gear uses an oil damped spring strut similar to the old Maule design.

Performance is good all round. One reviewer put it through a sportsman's aerobatic routine and reported that if performed equal to a Super Decathlon, but with lighter controls. Take off and landing are on par with a super cub, as you would expect since the wing area and weight are similar. And of course Kits are now available through R&B Aircraft.

Of course I'm somewhat biased since I'm building one. :D
