Re: Experimental, Liberty 181

As I recall, the Liberty 181 was supposed to be a homebuilt version of a C180. A guy named Bud Morrison (?) from around Kelso WA built it & supposedly marketed a kit version. Looks like he sold the whole shebang to someone in southern Oregon.
I just googled Liberty 181 & found one for sale in BC on Barnstormers for $50K. I think I'd stick with the real thing.

This looks interesting, however it is certainly no copy of a 180. This photo may give the wrong perception, but it sure looks like the axles are way too far rearward. From that photo I'd guess one tap on the brakes and you're on your way to the prop shop.

Looks like the hangars on the east side of Arlington WA airport to me.

Then there's this one: http://www.libertyaircraft.com/ but I think that's different than what you are talking about.

... and that one started as this one: http://www.europa-aircraft.com/monowheel/ Got a 'merican engine and three wheels when it came over here. The original was kind cool.

Re: Experimental, Liberty 181

Doesn't look like any hangars at Arlington that I've ever seen before, & I've been there lotsa times. The MLG does look pretty far aft, esp considering there's an O-470 under the hood. The lower cowl has a wierd line to it, otherwise the airplane isn't too bad looking. But you;re right-- it's no 180 replica. Note that I said "version" in my earlier post, not copy.

Re: Experimental, Liberty 181

I looked at the red ,white, and blue one , several years ago in mind to purchase. Most of the plane was composite panels. Wing skins, and fuselage covering. Don't remember what structure was underneath. I was set to buy it , but an older wiser friend talked me out of it. Plane had some unique (good) ideas. One I remember was the instrument panel was hinged at the bottom to fold down to access everything easily. Did not fly it, as I think the designer was not legal to fly. I think it was medical problems. If I remember correctly he also designed and built a few composite floats which I went to look at for a Stinson.

Re: Experimental, Liberty 181

Thanks For all the help guys!
Digging a little deeper into it, all the parts are either 182 or 180, with Huge I beams for spars, Huge flaps and ailerons, 56 degrees on the flaps, screw jack on the tail, engine mount, engine, prop all off 182. 125 cruise and ridiculous slow if hanging on prop.
Has some good ideas!
Always fun to look. Yea I know it's the only one out there. And it is not a 180, but I very seldom go down the center of the road between the lines!!

Re: Experimental, Liberty 181

Several years ago I went over to Illinois Valley (Cave Junction) to look at a Cessna part that the Liberty guy had for a 180 project I was working on. Glanced at the Liberty while I was there...... From what I remember, the fuselage was mostly fiberglass/composite (could have been aluminum skin, was a few years back) and I kind of remember a tube frame around the passenger compartment. The interior was very large with lots of room. The wing was typical dual spar and rib construction with a thin composite/fiberglass "skin" bonded to the ribs. He had two sets in his shop. Was an interesting looking aircraft. I am not to fond of the parallel struts though, seems to me that they would get in the way while loading.

I'm the one who took that photo on Airliners.net linked above. It was taken at Pearson Field in Vancouver WA (KVUO), in 2005. The airplane had been based at Woodland (W27) for years, then it was at Pearson for a while. According to the FAA registry it was de-registered in 2008 and exported to Canada.

Re: Experimental, Liberty 181

I stand corrected, sorry. I took a ride in a 170 out of Arlington a couple of years ago and the little pads in front of the hangars looked like that. I was too @($*% stupid to realize that the other hangar apron pads in the area might look similar because of the weather or some other factor. D'OH #-o

Re: Experimental, Liberty 181

This airplane is blast to fly and is extremely easy to land. The 0-470 makes you fell like superman and the 40 foot wingspan with its 19 1/2 feet of flap lets you land a 40 mph. If you want to bump this plane on its prop you will need to lock up the brakes and shove the stick forward.

Re: Experimental, Liberty 181

Its funny this thread popped up! I was just browsing the British Columbia kijiji for airplanes (as i do regularly) and there's a Liberty 181 for sale in Northern BC... I don't think I'm supposed to put links to for sale items on here but I'm sure a little google search would turn it up.

Re: Experimental, Liberty 181

Larry Frey is still in the area. He's been flying out of PG for the past 10-15 years. He was flying a 1900 and now he's flying a Conquest for a corporate company. In regards to the 181, their is a small business that I would like to buy with the money, but if I sell the Liberty after I buy this business, I'd like to get a smaller bush plane.
