Exploring Nevada

 [-X It's been a fun few days of exploring around the new HSF location naming places and finding history. Checkout some of these things we have found.

Coors can from 1959. At least after looking through all the info we can find that's what we are thinking.

This old green Duraglas bottle is coming up with the early 40's

Then we have the old telegraph line with insulators dated from 1907-the mid 40's. I think the railroad crews have been shooting them, so we are saving them.

And last but not least, you can date this one. It's pretty awesome

Been fun few days

I hope your coming to the HSF. We're just getting started exploring the new (to me) area

Re: Good week exploring Nevada

I was out there today and will compile my notes and email to you.
Jealous of your finds, especially the wagon. It may have a story.
Insulators:
The RR quit the telegraph and communication lines a few years ago. The scrappers came at night and pulled down copper wires. Steel wires, insulators, x arms, and poles were left especially in the desert. In more "scenic" areas the RR cut off the poles at ground level and rolled up the wire and gave away the rest. At 55 + MPH I doubt that RR crews hit many insulators. Many got broken when the scrappers pulled the wires.
As AKT has warned before the darker lake bed is damp and muddy underneath even during this drought but I thought only red planes were at risk.
This is big interesting country. It will be a great HSF this year.

It would be really great to check this out if someone has time to contact the owner, maybe we can get permission to land nearby:

Fly Geyser
Looks to be photo shopped but it really looks like that. .Not sure of the owner but that hot water is a real liability and he wouldn't want to seem to invite anyone to a scalding. I know you can see it from the road and Kevin may know if the road is ok to land on.
Kevin will brief all on the geothermal waters everywhere out there. Some springs are ok but some can scald or kill with the hot water.
There should at least be a flight led over that geyser for a photo op.

Thanks for the info Chance. Opal and Gold mines out there, too.

South of I-80 is where I think these were supposedly found, just to add to the mystique of the place:

Thanks Cory, and here is some more info from a highway historical marker. The I-80 corridor pretty much follows this route:

Re: Exploring Nevada

I love finding old junk like that, especially when it's unexpected and or with a historical story behind it. I wonder how many current readers even know what those funny triangular holes in the top of the beer can are, or how they were made, haha. Man, that brings back memories

I can't make it to HSF this year, but dang it I'm coming soon! When are the 2016 dates looking like, if you're looking that far ahead?

Not PhotoShop at all. Just contact the land owner for permission to visit. There's been a post about this on the Nevada Backroads Facebook page.

He charges a $1000 for photographers to visit. Hoping we can schedule a time to go check it out along with Breakfast at Soldier Meadows.

Picked up a new hat band for my cowboy hat. I seriously do not like snakes. You never see them until your on top of them. Image

Re: Exploring Nevada

AKTahoe.

At least that rattler isn't as dangerous as finding a snow snake at the top of one of your drop ins in Alaska. :D

I so wish I could get the time off for HSF this year. I would love to come down and even tell me "Story" as the evening entertainment.

Well then, obviously whoever prepared your rattler didn't do it right. After skinning (to make the aforementioned hat band), I like an overnight marinade in Yoshida's all purpose sauce. Then dredge in Shake 'n Bake and bake in a hot oven until the meat comes clean off the bones. As they say: tastes kinda like chicken!
