Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

extended baggage for 180

I was planning on installing the battery on firewall mod as well as the airglas extended baggage. However my 180 H has the factory extended baggage. I spoke with Airglas and they said their STC was for aircraft without the factory extended baggage only. There appears to be an extra support riveted into the skin to hold the factory baggage. Does anyone have advise on this?

Re: extended baggage for 180

Are you sure it's actually an STC/approval limitation? Sure does seem like a mechanic would allow it unless it's called out specifically not to be used on planes with the factory EB. Their website lists 180-180K. Brackets/supports can always be removed, right?

Are referring to a hump for the battery

Re: extended baggage for 180

Have you looked at Selkirk extended baggage. They make one for all 180's with the firewall mounted battery

Just be sure you’ll never want electronic ignition. The firewall mounted battery isn’t compatible with Surefly.

What does where the battery is located have to do with an e-mag? is there an explicit prohibition in the STC?

EDIT: I see what your talking about... It has nothing to do with the firewall mount, but the traditional battery that is used in the installation. The STC states: "The airframe must be equipped with a 12-Volt battery having a minimum capacity of 20AH or a 24-Volt battery having a minimum capacity of 8.5AH." The SBSJ-16 has Nominal Capacity of 15 Ah. The EarthX is also under this 20ah threshold. Interesting...

Thanks for that tidbit.

Surefly says they are working on changing that. Electro air does not make a motion of battery size required IIRC, so there is still that option for electronic ignition right now.

Due diligence: Check with Transport Canada to ensure they will accept the STC because your C180H is NOT on the Airglas EB180 AML (only the "H" series is missing, so guessing it was an oversight during editing).

Re: extended baggage for 180

Exactly. Hope Surefly gets around this. I’m torn if I would reverse the flat floor baggage and battery location, but it would have delayed my decision if I’d known about Surefly at the time. Pretty sure I would have opted for the Surefly over the baggage mod.

Another option that I’ve seen suggested is to add another firewall battery in parallel, but that would be tough to fit. Apparently some 24 Volt airplanes have two firewall mounted SBSJ-16 in series.

Re: extended baggage for 180

1. factory extended baggage not flat. it steps up 5" so makes loading bikes difficult. (for me) I am sure there are tons of other reasons to go with the flat floor.

So who has taken a factory extended baggage out and installed a flat version?

I did. I used the Selkirk STC. Removed the factory baggage floor supports and installed B rivets to fill the holes in the exterior skin.

Re: extended baggage for 180

I used the AirGlass carbon Fiber extended baggage. It costs a bit more but in town so if you add shipping it was a break even. I spend a day with a cut off wheel carefully trimming down the L channels so it would fit. If you are set up for it drilling out the rivets and filling the holes would be a lot easier. DENNY

Re: extended baggage for 180

Removing the side rails isn’t specifically identified as a step in the installation instructions of the Selkirk STC, but installation of the Selkirk floor is. Because the old supports interfere with the new floor, it’s “inferred” that the old supports have to come out. (See what I did there? :D )

I don’t like fibreglass, but there isn’t a metal option that I know of to accomplish the flat floor. I like the Airglass carbon fibre better, but it isn’t eligible on the A185F. Probably a field approval would be possible in the US, but not an option here.

Re: extended baggage for 180

I had the same issue - if you search here you’ll see I didn’t get real far. However, I hired a DER at DER Associates and had the approval paperwork back in a few days.

I don’t have a great picture of it, but if you need anything shoot me a PM.
