Re: Fatal Kitfox crash at Caldwell idaho, Sunday

As some of you already know, the FAA occasionally reads this forum, or someone reads it for them and report what is said. I got a phone call today asking for an official statement about the first takeoff attempt, etc. I reallize I should have called them first, that's my fault. After I told him what I knew (nothing more than I said here), I got a little bit more information about the crash.
1: The preliminarry report will be released tomorrow or the next day, but it won't say very much.
2: The engine has not been torn down yet, they don't know if it was producing power at the time of the crash.
3: An engine failure alone is not enough to explain this accident.
4: The plane appears to have gone "straight in" there were no skid marks on the ground.
5: It is the worst damage he has seen in a plane this size, the firewall was wrapped around the engine.

My condolences to the family, this is about the worst way possible to end a flyin at the factory to meet with other Kitfox owners. I do not expect there will ever be a complete explanation for this crash.
