Favorite Food At Or Near Airfields

Not necessarily information about airstrips or airports, but more general info about a greater area or a route of flight.

Favorite Food At Or Near Airfields

I'll admit, I didn't search yet. But is there another thread on favorite/great food/restaurants at or near airfields? If not, maybe we should start one?

Anybody been to the Ranch House BBQ (http://www.ranchhousebbq.com/index.php) in Olympia, WA? Any airfields close to it?

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Re: Favorite Food At Or Near Airfields

Truckee has a GREAT deli on the field. With lots of COLD beer in my hanger!!!

Bridgeport is great. Good burritos with a 5 minute or less walk with additional options.

Almanor has loaner bikes for the 10 minute ride to town with a lot of great options.

Susanville has bikes as well ( have not been up there for awhile and bikes were run down, but there is a great dirt strip there and you can walk to food option in 10 minutes or so.

South Lake Tahoe is another good option with a new restuarant. (A pretty cool airshow coming on the 28th of August)

Stead has food on the field ....but just ok (Air Races in Sept) Everyone should fly to Truckee to have some fun of our own and shuttle to the air races.....Just a thought

Was just in Bend, Oregon and the restuarant on the field was great!

Minden has a restuarnat...its a greasy spoon, but just ok...

Quincy is also an option with good food less than 10 minutes away from airport.

I could keep going but will let someone else take over....

Burger Me is outstanding! In fact, the guy that owns it (Mark Esty) is our good buddy here in town. Look up Moody's Bistro in Truckee. Then go to his calender and have a look at the "Red Barn" dinner once a month (sorry, I still have not figured out the link and picture stuff here). Thats one of the ranches we fly into. Its a great evening and great food!

Blue Ridge airport (MTV) in Martinsville VA has an onfield restaurant which features the world's best fried bologna sandwich- must be a 1/4" slab of meat, with a scrambled egg, onions, and Tabasco sauce, as well as a few other ingredients I can't recall. Delicious!

Carthage NC has great on-field NC barbecue, and Suffolk Virgina (SFQ) has decent home cooking.

Those are just a few near me that I've frequented.

Oh, and I hear that cold Carolina Pale Ale is available at Raleigh East airport...

Santa Paula KSZP has the best pulled pork sandwich in SoCal and it's right on the field.

If you get there on open hangar weekend, you won't be able to stop drooling even after your lunch. Everything from a polished Spartan Executive (slurp) to machines you have to ask the name of. Cool airport - more like a time warp wormhole. AND... they usually have reasonably priced avgas!

There is a very decent Mexican joint on the North End of Friday Harbor KFHR. Serves fresh ingredients. A but funky, but very good.

Short walk from transient parking. Turn left out of gate go to the end and turn right. 1/4 mile or so on right.

Driggs Idaho. KDIJ has pretty good food. Best thing is you get to walk through Dr Rich Sugdens collection of planes. Probably some of the nicest restored warbirds around. 8)

For the Ohio area guys:

Carroll County (TSO) is tied with Urbana-Grimes (I74) for the best pies in Ohio, and maybe the whole country. I have never had better pies anywhere, then at these two places, and they just happen to be at airports. The rest of their food is good too.

Bought my first plane at Grimes Field in 2000. Food was great.

Re: Favorite Food At Or Near Airfields

From the recent Montana Antique Aircraft Association Fly-in: the beer van cruising the tie down area.

Can you imagine this at Oshkosh???? It sure is nice to be treated like an adult (I'll state the obvious, the beer is for AFTER flying, and it is left to the individual pilot to act accordingly). They (the MAAA) even trust you to ride your bike during the fly-in, also unlike Oshkosh! And if so, do you think the micro brews and the reg. beer would all be priced at two bucks? See why I opted for Three Forks last weekend?Image

Barnstormer Cafe at Greeley CO...friend of mine and his wife run it. It is a flyin breakfast sort of place on the weekends...$100 pancakes sort of thing...but open during the weekday mornings also.

Gwennies Old Alaska Restaurant about a quarter mile from the Lake Spenard/Lake Hood floatplane base. I'd pump floats for a week just to have the old man pay for lunch there one more time. [-o<

I also would like to put a vote in for "The Spruce Goose" at Jefferson County Airport 0S9.

Really good food and great pie.

Be sure to recalculate your W&B before you leave.
