Ferry Rate?

Out of curiosity, what kind of ferry rates have you guys seen for getting a plane from point A to point B? Just wondering if there is a standard deal, or if it varies widely depending on the ferry pilot. Also wondering if it depends on the type of plane (i.e., is the ferry rate for a Super Cub different than for a 182)?

Anybody here ever paid someone to ferry, or are any of you guys ferry drivers yourselves?

Re: Ferry Rate?

The dealer paid the tab for Wisconsin-Idaho. 2009 it was about $400 / day plus expenses. Twins, singles etc the rate was the same.

I purchased Scout and got my TW endorsement in Idaho. I needed a lot of help!

Re: Ferry Rate?

Also, make sure your pilot is named directly on the insurance certificate. My company requires it.

Mostly curiosity. A buddy asked me today and I didn't know the answer.

Re: Ferry Rate?

I hired a ferry pilot/instructor to help me get my new purchase from Fl back to Texas, paid 250.00 a day plus expenses. Had enough time to cover the ins requirements when I got home.

I hear the going rate to bring a cub from Alaska is $800 a day plus expenses. Even if your sitting on the ground waiting for weather. :P

Re: Ferry Rate?

I've been wondering too. Always thought it would be fun to get setup to ferry planes on the side. $400/day plus expenses seems like quite a bit but what do I know.

You need an instrument rating to ferry planes or will just a commercial rating due?

Re: Ferry Rate?

Training, certification, class 2 medicals, currency, time in type, charts and documentation will cost money. For an (8) hour day $400 = $50.00 an hour. I do not think pilots are raking in too much money asking for that amount considering the overhead and liability they encounter. A good pilot is worth a hell of a lot more than that in my opinion, I have seen the good, the bad, and the down right ugly crap in this business and the good guys are simply priceless if, you are lucky enough to meet one of the winners.

$400 is a good starting point in my opinion. Plus other compensation as needed.

Re: Ferry Rate?

There is a match maker of sorts that uses airline guys to move planes. I signed up to be on his list years ago, but never ferried a plane. The idea being airline guys can use their pass/Jumpseat privileges to get to the plane and keep the cost down. The average going rate was $400/day + expenses as needed. There is some of me that still would like to do this, but I'm too busy with family, work, etc. at this point. In case anyone is interested, here's his website:

Re: Ferry Rate?

I charge $400 plus all expenses. That is the $50/hour. I have ferried two planes on straight floats from the mid-West to AK, and a Maule from NM to CA. It is a fun gig, and you get to meet some great people on the way. It is kind of nerve racking getting into a plane that you really don't know the service history on.

Re: Ferry Rate?

I've done a few at roughly $400 a day plus expenses for a single engine airplane. Sometimes I'll charge a flat rate and bang it out quick (i.e. super cub: San Diego - Maryland. Home on day 3)
I was supposed to Ferry a Pilatus Porter and the guy wanted to pay me $200 a day... I said for a specialty aircraft that a small amount of people are insurable in I should be charging $800. Speaking of which, he didn't want to throw me on the insurance so that was a deal breaker as well.

Re: Ferry Rate?

Everything is negotiable. I would say that you find an instructor with commercial rating and ask them how many hours a day they are working. Guaranteed they aren't logging 8 a day. Offer them more than they are making sitting at home and they just may very well take it to build time. You might be able to command $400 a day for a pilatus. But for a cub? $25/hr is more than a left seat driver in an RJ makes. Just sayin.

I paid $200 a day plus expenses just a couple of years ago to bring my J3 back from Michigan to Denver. I didn't set the rate or negotiate. I asked what it would take and shook hands. The best flying the guy had done in years. Everybody was happy.

Re: Ferry Rate?

A Pilatus and TBM will run you around $600-800 a day minimum. Some instructors are charging upwards of $1k a day. For the Citation Mustang, I can find pilots at $750-1k a day. Remember, it costs $10k a year to just stay current in each jet you fly. For a piston plane that is common, I would say a fair # is probably $300-500 a day.

Luckily, you can go a hell of a lot further in a Pilatus or TBM in a day! :)
