Field approval for Pponk with C66 prop

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Field approval for Pponk with C66 prop

Has anyone gotten a field approval for the Pponk Super Eagle -50 engine and 2A34C66/90AT-8 prop?

The prop is listed on the 182/Pponk STC but not on the 180, so I thought the FAA would approve it. We currently have the C66 prop and would rather put off buying a new prop.

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Field approval for Pponk with C66 prop

Hey, I'm Boulder - just bought a 180 based in Longmont. I don't have specific experience, but I am interested in the topic. Shortfielder got a field approval - he's based down in Durango.

Did you see this thread?

I have a 337 for running a 2A34C66/90AT-4 through -8 as well as a2A34C58/90AT-4 through -8 on my airplane. It is a '53 model 180 and I would share that with you if it helps.

I will say in advance (at the risk of upsetting the apple cart) that as someone else posted in the other thread, this is a ripping combo in cruise, and take off / climb will be equal or better than a MT 2 blade (I have run both of these back to back) Find -4 or -2 blades for this prop and get the approval for the airplane and you will have weight similar to an MT 3 blade and very close performance at a fraction of the cost.

Take care, Rob

Re: Field approval for Pponk with C66 prop

Rob,

I'm currently working with an FAA inspector to get an 88" C66 field approved on a Pponk for my '56 C-180. May I please get a copy of your FA? It will likely speed my process up considerably.

Thanks!

This has been my exact experience. I have an -4 (86”) C58 (same blades as C66 to my understanding). It’s the only prop type (3rd individual prop) I have used on this particular aircraft w/ the Pponk -50 so not as much to compare to as Rob. It’s a different aircraft, but slightly slower with slightly better takeoff pull than a friends machine with the MT 2-blade. Another friend who works closely with me went with the 86” Mac 3-blade when he upgraded. Had a lot of days flying together and working loads in and out of the same strips. Far as I can tell we cruise exactly the same (tho I usually burn slightly less fuel so 2-blade could be minusculy faster???) and pull the same loads out of the same strips day in and day out. In my head I know his 3-blade pulls harder but sure can’t tell it from the way the planes perform!

Plus this prop is 1/3 the price of a new 3-blade. Might not be if too many folks catch on so shhhhh. Then again, the three-blades and even the 2-blade MT LOOK a lot cooler, so hopefully I can keep buying the old junky 2-blade macs cheap.

Good luck getting a FA, shouldn’t be too tough as there are a lot of them out there. If you don’t have a copy of one yet, pm me I can send you a copy of mine.
