Finding ADs and Service Bulletins by engine serial
Lycoming, Continental, Hartzell, McCauley, or any broad spectrum drive system component used on multiple type.
Is there an easy way to so this? I called Lycoming today and they said a third party service called ATP handle their data by making a searchable cross reference that associates serial number with applicable manufacturer bulletins and FAA directives.
How do you engine builders out there do your due diligence to find updates?
Am I stupid to assume parts I have ordered new are already addressed by applicable bulletins? I frequently ran into superseded part numbers from the IPC when shopping my list, but where does that data come from?
Thanks.

It's actually not too hard to figure out if you have one of the ad subscriptions. You will have to pull the ad list for the particular model of engine and just go through the list and determine what applies to your engine. As far as the parts you have already bought, At times parts from the manufacturer can possibly have an ad that kills them but the same pma'd part from another vendor won't be affected, you'll just need to verify everything is good prior to assembly. Other than a factory new engine or factory reman, a serial number specific search would not do any good on a field overhaul or anything that has been in service for any length of time due to the possibility of various facilities that could have reworked parts, different parts from pma'd vendors being installed or factory parts previously installed from different manufacture lots.
When you actually generate the report for your engine you'll find that there is going to be quite a bit that will not apply. Check the sb's too.

My IA buddy uses "The AD Toolbox" by zookaviation.com 803-696-1041.
Not sure if it includes SB's though.

Not sure where AD Toolbox gets their data, but while ADs are easy enough to find, SB's and Service Letters/Instructions aren't that easy to seek out for a particular model. AD data is sourced from the FAA, whereas the other is sourced from the manufacturer.
Here's one that I've been operating from for determining which parts to replace or overhaul:
https://www.lycoming.com/sites/default/ ... enance.pdfBut finding it was just a Google search. It would be great to find all SB's for a given serial number, but I'm not sure that data exists. Manufacturer data is disparate, seemingly.
