Finishing up my ticket (Oregon Advice)

Guys,

I am in need of some good advice.

First some background about my experience: I have flown about 60 hours with about half that as dual. I have received dual cross county and I have soloed in a cub. I own the cub and most of my flying has been local. I completed the knowledge exam earlier this summer.

I would like a recommendation on what I should do to finish my ticket. With work being busy I may need to take some time off to finish. I need an instructor who has actually had some successful students recently. Looking over the requirements I need experience with navigation instruments, more radio time, solo cross country, control tower experience and the hours needed to prep for the check ride.

What is the best approach and where should I go. I would like to get this wrapped up by the end of the year assuming I can get the time off.

Thanks for the advice.

I don't know anything about instructors in Newport so can't help you there, but Corvallis is a great place to learn how to fly and escape the fog of Newport. And again I'm not sure on instructor status, but usually there are 5+ active instructors in Corvallis and I wouldn't be surprised if one of them would do the training with you in your Cub. Good luck!

Re: Finishing up my ticket (Oregon Advice)

I don't want to train in the cub any longer. Not saying I do not need to keep practicing, but I want to move on to an instructor and plane that will allow me to be prepared for a check ride. The cub with no navigation equipment is not going to help.

I am looking for a place to go for one week or less and train everyday with the goal of being ready and successfully pass a check ride/oral exam at the end. Things are much more difficult in rural Oregon.

I need to fly to a controlled airport for three take offs and landings, receive dual training in VOR/Navigation, night flying, and required time practicing for the check ride. Then get signed off for the check ride and do it!

Work is crazy busy right now so I will probably not have time off until December. So where should I go? Corvallis could work and I can stay with a friend. Any other recommendations? Especially looking for an instructor who has students actually finish this year.

Thanks again,

David

Yeah then I think Corvallis would be your best bet. I have a camper & futon in my hanger you could sleep on as well if need be. If you have any relation to OSU you could join the OSU flying club and use their awesome rentals. I can ask my old instructor who he would recommend, but I'm sure there is someone here would could easily help you meet your goal. 15 min flight to Eugene's class D airspace. VOR on field in Corvallis. Daniels Field (grass) 10 min away. Restaurants on the field in Independence, Albany & Salem. And only 50min drive from Newport.. so what more do ya need! If ya need any more help let me know.

Not to be critical, but you should have been posting this about 3 months ago. You could have easily knocked off your solo x-countries, etc over the summer during the good flying weather and be a private pilot by now. So I would get with the program as soon as possible-- the first day of fall is next week and so we're heading into the rainy season, which can make it tough to complete flights as scheduled.

Hotrod150,

I agree 100% My flight training has been a long frustrating experience. As for wasting the summer. I started a new job last fall, moved into a new to me house, and am now spending evenings, weekends and nights working on the house. Still am not yet moved in, empty walls, boxes in every room. I have been ready to give up many times and would have if it wasn't for the fact that I have a plane in a hanger staring at me.

Tyler,

I may take you up on that offer. It will have to be latter this year as I have a bunch of deadlines to meet at work.

Re: Finishing up my ticket (Oregon Advice)

I sincerely hope that this means that you decided to dump that dipshit instructor who thinks its a reasonable idea to dive at a plane rolling out from landing. https://www.backcountrypilot.org/forum/air-rage-12940 This kind of behavior can end lives and adversely impact the uncertain future of general aviation. The aviation community in the PNW is too small to get away with this crap. I hope that you have learned to prioritize safety and conduct yourself with respect if you decide to pursue the privileges of an airman.

You really should only continue advancing with your training if you choose to make a conscious commitment to keeping a cool head in the cockpit under all circumstances.

That's my best advice for you.

Re: Finishing up my ticket (Oregon Advice)

If you want to knock it off in a week fly down to Arizona to Sheble Aviation. Give them a call (760) 326-0343. Tell them what you have done and what you want. I cannot think of any other accelerated course. This may be the wrong fit but call them anyway.

Another thought is that Skinner Aviation in Ashland OR has a good instructor. I think he is there every day. (541) 482-7675. Sounds lie you need an instructor that is not just doing it on their time off from their day job.

I think Glass Cockpit in Boise does an accelerated course as well, at least I know they do with instrument ratings and I would assume they could finish up your training in short order if the weather cooperated.

If you want to come east, can take a week off work, and schedule with Darin Hunt (Aerodrome Aviation at Caldwell.... KEUL that has a IFR C150) you're more than welcome to stay at my house in Emmett (about a 30 minute drive to KEUL).

Re: Finishing up my ticket (Oregon Advice)

Since no one has mentioned it. How about PM'ing me your opinions of Columbia Aviation in Scappose and Hillsboro. They are both within a couple hours drive from me.

Thanks,
