Re: Fires Close Some Idaho Airstrips

I was lucky to hit Copper Basin when I did, last weekend, the wind shifted a bit, kind of a north flow, and it really socked in here at my place plus CB I'm sure. I flew by the Big Southern Butte and didn't/ couldn't see it until I was only 3 miles away. I flew to Logan Utah the next day to do some mountain biking, mainly because it looked pretty clear thataway, it's gotten that bad. An Idaho pilot flying to Utah on a holiday  weekend, don't seem right

Re: Fires Close Some Idaho Airstrips

Hey, us Utah guys fly to Idaho. Besides, you come here for our red rocks, right?

Seriously, the smoke is horrible. I spent yesterday hitting seven airports in southern Idaho just to get away. We started with lunch in Logan and headed north. The haze was bad all day. A fire fighting TFR popped up at Bear Lake just after we flew through. Coming back over the Great Salt Lake the visability was five miles at best. Today in SLC the smoke is so bad the misses and I both complained to each other about sore throats and deduced it's from the smoke.

Fingers crossed for a low pressure and some rain. I need to spend some more time in Idaho before the snow flies.

Sounds like the fire is getting really close to the ranch. Hopefully the Forest Service firefighters can keep it away.

Re: Fires Close Some Idaho Airstrips

Sulphur Crick Report - From the resort-

Kiere and ValDean report that, "We are completely socked in with smoke. No visibility. Ten Forest Service fire fighters are stationed here since last Sunday, 9/3/17. A Forest Service helicopter is currently dropping 1,000-gallon bucket dumps on the southern perimeter of the fire, which is closest to our ranch."
However, the Incident Commander has advised no "boots on the ground" because of the nature of this fire and the way it is moving. He's afraid the fire fighters will get surrounded by fire and be trapped due to the high activity of fire "spotting."
"IN LIGHT OF THE PRESENT CIRCUMSTANCES AND THE IMMINENT THREAT OF EVACUATION, WE HAVE DECIDED TO CLOSE DOWN THE SCR RUNWAY UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT WE WILL NOT BE SERVING BREAKFAST OR HOSTING OVERNIGHTS DURING THIS TIME.
The Forest Service is going to be working from the air trying to re-direct the southern boundary of the fire.
We are hoping that the closure will give the helicopters more latitude in their ability to expedite the bucket dumps."

Re: Fires Close Some Idaho Airstrips

Thanks for the info on Sulfur Creek. We are at Johnson Creek now and was hoping to get breakfast while nearby. Visibility is forecast to improve here in the next 48 hours. Will head for somewhere clearer when that happens. First time to Idaho and haven't seen the sights yet. Did see a bear from the hot tub this morning though.

9-06-17 e-mail out from Sulphur Creek

Latest on Sulfur Creek - This from Kiere via email:
"Thanks for your prayers, we need them.
Here' what is going on today:

Attached is the latest infrared picture of the Honeymoon Fire. The Incident Commander on site has ordered one of these pictures every night.

The smoke today is thick with no visibility. The density of the smoke is helpful in protecting us from further spread of the fire towards us from the west.
As the smoke inversion dissipates today, the IC has ordered another full fuel cycle of Helicopter bucket drops utilizing the water from our pond. The helicopter used 1000 gallon buckets yesterday and got a good handle on the southern expansion of the fire which is the most threatening to our structures.

However, on the infrared mapping picture, there is one burning spot 1.4 miles from our lodge. The IC and 3 fire fighters have ventured out to asses that spot this morning at 9 am.

Presently, we are actively running sprinkler lines in hopes of
humidifying the north and western areas of timber around the barn and the lodge.
We have evacuated 50% of our horses.

At this time we are closely watching the spread of the fire to the north as it has burnt down into the Half Moon Creek drainage and is headed north with some possible fall back down towards Sulphur Creek Ranch.

Half Moon Creek is also the source of our hydro power and domestic water.
We play it hour by hour now!
Kiere"

Sulphur Creek is OPEN again.

Alana Erickson
Yes big thanks to everybody on the ground and the helicopter pilot who is fighting that fire solo in the first days. I don't know who he was but he made a big difference!

Idaho Aviation Assoc.

Here is a Final Update on the status of the Honeymoon Fire near Sulphur Creek Ranch! Let's remember Sulphur Creek for the rest of this season. This has been a rough one for them, from the start until now. Let's finish this season great by supporting our friends at Sulphur Creek.
--Crista Worthy, Flyline Editor
Kiere reports:
The Fire Management Officer of the Salmon Challis National Forest, Josh Graham, decided to remove the fire crew from Sulphur Creek Ranch this morning.
We had light rain this morning for about 40 minutes. The forecast predicts more precipitation for tomorrow in the mountains.
Fire protection devices, sprinklers and fire hoses are being left in place at Sulphur Creek Ranch until mid-October or sooner if we get significant precipitation.
We will be open for our usual Fly-in breakfast this Friday, September 15th!
New fall hours for breakfast 8:00-10:00 am.
We will open for overnight guests tomorrow, September 14th!
Trail closures will be lifted over the next several days.
Although the fire is not technically “out” we believe the conditions are safe.
A special thank you goes to the USFS Fire Crew for all their sincere efforts to keep Sulphur Creek Ranch safe from the Honeymoon Fire!
We are very thankful!
Kiere, ValDean, and Meredith

Re: Fires Close Some Idaho Airstrips

I think fire season just ended. We went from hot and smokey to cold and rainy overnight. I'm guessing a lot of the higher strips are getting snow right now.

I was working below Borah today on a pretty cool day, and a thunderbumper moved through, when it cleared off I was surprised to NOT see any snow up high. Not yet, but getting close!

Re: Fires Close Some Idaho Airstrips

Don't bet on this fire season being over just yet. The rain were getting and cool temps certainly help, but it'll take a real toad strangler to really end this fire season.

Re: Fires Close Some Idaho Airstrips

Fires might be classified as active, and even grow some, but fire season is essentially over. The biggest job right now is demobilizing the resources. TFR's come down slowly, but it's a done deal for the season.

Re: Fires Close Some Idaho Airstrips

4 days of steady rain and snow above 7000 here in Cascade. Should put a hurt on the highline and ibex fires which were plaguing the middle fork with smoke. Heading back in tomorrow as weather looking much improved. .... I'll try to report. Might stop in at Sulphur.
