fires/smoke in Idaho

I'm planning a trip up to Idaho the end of August and noticed that there are a few forest fires in the area.
I plan on JC as a base camp with a few exploration camping trips to points north from there.

Is there anyone up there that can give me a report on the smoke in the area? Is visibility reduced in the valley floors?
Thanks folks,
RR
ps. anyone around that wants to meet up? Aug 25th-30th.

It's really clear. One of the best wettest Augusts for awhile.

RR, there are variables that would determine the amount of smoke. Right now in southern Idaho, the smoke has lessened because of some recent rains. A few thunderstorms and some wind can change all that quickly. Unless there are new fires right in the Johnson Creek area, it shouldn't be too bad. I might be able to get away during that time. When you get close to the time, either post an itinerary or shoot me a pm and I will see what I can do. I hope you have a good trip.

Re: fires/smoke in Idaho

I'm not sure how far North your thinking on going but here's a report I can give you.
On July 15-18 I flew into Shearer, Moose Creek and Fish Lake. There was just a thin fire smoke haze. Except for flying directly into the sunrise, it wasn't any problem.
On July 27- August 2 I flew from the Puget Sound out to Rexburg, back to Boise then north to Cascade, McCall, Grangeville then to our place. (37ID Hungry Ridge Ranch) The weather in the mountains was so-so. Smoke wasn't bad, just misty, light rain, low ceilings at times. Some days better than others but all days still doable.
On August 5 went down to Salt Lake City & came back on the 10th. Fair amount of thunder storm activity between SLC and Boise. This last week things have been very unstable up here. I have stayed on the ground from Monday-Friday. When the winds blow from the west, fire smoke has gotten real thick, even down in the valleys. Visibility ranges from 1/2 mile to 5 miles!
On Sunday August 10 I took this picture from Grangeville looking east.

Image

We got thunder storms and rain each night Mon,Tue, Wed, Thu & Fri. That brought the ceilings to the ground in many areas but it cleared out the fire smoke by morning. I took this picture Tuesday. Looking down the airstrip to the north. Note how clear it is after Mondays t-storms & winds. The Lowell fire sure flared up!

Image

On Wednesday & Thursday there was NO smoke anywhere! Not even from the Lowell fire! Friday the smoke came in real thick. 1/2 mile visibility! That night the rain/lightning/thunder was the worst its ever been. I was SOOO glad I was at home and not in a tent!
Well, there it is in my neck of the woods. Some days the visibility has been fine and some days horrible. The evenings have been stormy. Take it for what its worth. Its just been real unstable.
Be careful and fly safe.

I think the above description sums it up perfectly. This year is extremely variable. Significantly higher temps i.e. 10+ degrees above normal for North Central Idaho have resulted in narrow flying windows with dire results for some of those who have pushed the limits of the 3 H's (High, Hot and Heavy ) Gump has mentioned several times in other posts the 10 or 11/ 70 rule . Good season to embrace it. Today clear and cool and seems to be the beginning of a cooling trend back to normal temps but long term forecasts have been worthless this year.

Thanks Sam, that's helpful. I'll check the conditions closer to the time. There are plenty of strips to divert to if the smoke is bad.

I like to look at the webcams in the area to get a real idea of what to expect. Hamilton, Darby, Missoula, Stanley, Smiley, Salmon, JC....

Just keep in mind that during active fire seasons, visibility can change hour to hour as systems move through. I've seen things go from 20 mi visibility at 6am to having to file at 10am just to depart through the thick stuff.

Flew up to Johnson Creek yesterday. Just a little haze over the entire route from northern Utah. It was spectacular in JC! Wish we could have stayed. The grass is in excellent shape. I also flew down the middle fork and up the Loon Creek drainage. Really nice morning.

Re: fires/smoke in Idaho

I was at Fish Lake August 16. No smoke to speak of... The fire around Lowell was sending smoke south, but not much. Lots of mosquitos this time of year. The strip was in nice shape and had been mowed recently.

Don't know for sure about the smoke but suspect it is ok since I am about 60 miles to the west and we are clear. The evenings have finally been cool. Last night at my house (3200 feet ) it was 40 and as you know Fish Lake is quite a bit higher. Should help significantly with the bugs.

Wish I were going with you but have to head to Nevada.

fires/smoke in Idaho

There is very little fire activity in the Idaho backcountry right now. I was in McCall on fire duty there for the last week but we have been moved back to Minden NV due to lack of fires. The last week there has been a good amount of rain in that area. Should be drying out for the next few days. Likely perfect weather for early fall camping. There might still be some smoke in Hells canyon from the Somer fire. As for the rest they are mostly out.

Have a great trip.

Thanks Cap'n Mike.

Here's a shot from one of the ground troops of a fire we worked yesterday on the Kingbury grade near South Lake Tahoe.

We stomped that one, the smoke is gone.

Awesome pic! We were supposed to have the Idaho USFS smokejumper guys in our hangar in KSZT (Sandpoint) this summer and fall, not sure what happened to that deal. Seems like most of the action was further south, though.

Re: fires/smoke in Idaho

I was fueling my 182 in Grangeville and talking to a semi truck tanker driver. He pulled up to the pumps and took 2000 gals of Jet A. Said it was to feed the choppers fighting the fires in Hell's Canyon. I asked him how much fuel can one chopper carry. He replied 2000 gals! Good for 4 hours of flight time. At $5.50 a gallon were talkin' $22,000 for 8 hrs of flight time. He and another truck go from airport to airport getting fuel to keep their 2 choppers in the air. It really started to sink in how expensive it is to fight those fires!!!!

I'll never complain about my 12 gal per hr fuel burn again.

Re: fires/smoke in Idaho

The Forest Service likes to calculate our cost per gallon of water delivered. On the fire pictured above we put over 16,000 gallons of water on the fire in under 2 hours. The cost was under a dollar per gallon. We're cheaper than bottled water at the local gas station.
