First Unread Post

I've noticed a bug with the "first unread post" button.

It only happens when there are TWO pages of posts, with the first unread post on the first page, and subsequent posts spilling onto the second page. When you click on the thread header and the first page loads, the website automatically marks everything on the first page, including unread posts at the bottom, as "read". Clicking on the "first unread post" button takes you to first post on the second page, even if you haven't scrolled down to read the unread posts at the bottom of the first page.

I've gotten in the habit of looking at the number of total posts when I see only two pages under a thread. In the low to mid 20's, I will scroll down to see if there are unread threads (the blue "unread" marker will still be on them), then click on the "first unread" button to go to the next page. It's a nuisance for lazy pilots like me 8) 8)

Didn't see where anyone else had noted this, so I thought I would pass it along. I realized there were several times I had missed something in the conversation and had to go back to page 1 to catch up.

Thanks!

Re: First Unread Post

I find that I have to log out once in a while, as "new posts" will show everything posted since I last logged in. The unread stuff shows up in bold-face, the already-read stuff in subdued print.
I have to log out and later back in every time on another aviation site I participate on -- otherwise clicking on "new posts" or "unread posts" gives me nothing.
All this different software is a PITA. It's like people, you have to finesse them all just a little bit different.

Re: First Unread Post

I have to admit, I never use that button. I always review manually, but it does seem like a useful feature.

I'd say it's assuming that because you've loaded the page where the post exists, it's marking it read. Everything in this forum software is page event based. It doesn't care if you've scrolled down or not, there is no event handler setup to mark posts read once you scroll to them. That would be a much more modern but delicate user interface approach. Unfortunately it would probably also make the UI a little more unstable/unpredictable as it would make network requests while you are scrolling.

I think you have to live with it as it is. Sorry it's not as expected. 8)

Absolutely true. And it doesn't help that my wife is the boss.

The secret I've learned (no one tell my wife!) is to convince her that it's her idea.

Works pretty good at the office, too.

Haha!

Re: First Unread Post

I've noticed this phenomenon for some time and figured it was at my end somehow. It seems to me that on some of my other forums that button works differently. I dunno how to explain it though.

In my case, management could probably install all sorts of buttons here and there and I would just mash them to see what happens out of curiosity. It might be a rare and indecent form of torture actually. We already get all kinds of buttons on the internet that lead to doom. For instance ones like this: "Here dummy, mash this and we'll send you and whoever you can attract on an all expenses paid vacation to Lodi...."

I've been twittering lately and can't figure anything out. I've got 8 followers after a month and I think they're all kind of creepy. They probably feel the same about me; but now I'm drifting off topic.

Good night
