Re: Fish air bombing

All that does is kill a bunch of fish and is why Montana rigged up tanks in a Jet Ranger.

I read elsewhere that they studied that and 85% of the fish survive. I suppose the value of the 15% must be much lower than the cost of using a jet ranger?

Re: Fish air bombing

85% suvive, so 7.5% die from the tailwheel and 7.5% die from hitting the water ( just a thought )

Re: Fish air bombing

My instructor used to do this for the Utah Fish and Game in the 80's. They had it all figured out, airspeed and altitude of the drop. If you were too fast or high, too many died. They aimed for 90% survival and got it. If you were concerned you screwed up, just do a low pass and look for shiny silvery reflections on the top of the water - those were the dead ones.

Re: Fish air bombing

Here in northern Maine the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife uses the Cessna 180/185 with external tanks to stock trout in the ponds to small to land in.
