fishing for kids near Sisters/Camp Sherman

Hi,

We're taking our 4 year old boy to the Camp Sherman area on the Metolius (central Oregon) this Wednesday for a few days. I like fishing the Metolius, but it's not exactly good for kids--deep, fast water and tough fishing for few trout. I'm planning on taking him to the hatchery at Wizard Falls so he can see fish, but I'd really like to take him someplace where we can catch a bunch of brook trout (or rainbows, cutts whatever) so he can get excited about fishing.

A small mountain pond/lake would be ideal. Does anyone have any suggestions for such a place on Santiam Pass or up on the flanks of Mt. Jefferson? A 4 mile round trip is about the limit of walking for him.

I know the Gov't doesn't stock waters in wilderness areas any more, but maybe there are some lakes in the Jefferson wilderness that have self-sustaining trout populations. Wishful thinking, anyway.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I'm sure this is totally inappropriate, but when I saw this subject heading I thought I had stumbled onto a NAMBLA link

Ravi,

DELETE DELETE DELETE

I do not want to know why your mind went there. I rely on my airplane to spirit me and my family away from the perversions of modern society. I don't want to start a political rant, so 'nuff said.

On the subject of fishing, though, I will report back that the State of Oregon Wizard Falls fish hatchery has a kids fishing day once each June, where kids can do the closest thing I've ever seen to shooting trout in a barrel. And they're HUGE trout! It's on my calendar for next year.

Glad the fishing went well and sorry to offend you. Humor is my defense against a world I don't understand. I still laugh when I read the subject heading...

No offense taken. Sorry to get all serious on you. I know you're joking. I just hope I didn't offend any perverts.

To the OP. Try the Black Butte ponds. If you can get past the guards (tell em you're going to the lodge for dinner or something), go around the west side and you can hike back into the ponds. Midges, calabatis, wooly buggers, hare's ears etc. It's where I take my 5 yr old every few weeks.

Thanks for the tips! I'll tell them that we're going to the lake--er, I mean the Lodge to get something for dinner.
