If you plan for Alvord Dry Lake, you can get food, mogas, beverages at Fields Station, OR.

Re: Flaps on Takeoff -from CPA

Just got back from a road trip to Provo Utah. All the gas in Nevada that I put in the car had ethynol. Now I am not sure of Denio Junction. Utah still has clear gas.

Is there Lodging or (Camping available) I have never been there.

Several of us also use Lake El Mirage N.W. of Victorville CA to practice at for those in the So Ca area.

Re: Flaps on Takeoff -from CPA

I was thinking about this a couple years ago...wondering why there isn't some sort of annual backcounty fly-in or STOL event in the Alvord. It seems like a great place for such an event (except for proximity to supplies and emergency medical). It could be a pilot's version of burning man....call it flying man. Ha!

There is a little information here:

Should this be moved to a new thread to let the planning begin?

Re: Flaps on Takeoff -from CPA

Sounds like fun, I'll try to go too.. And as always, as you all know, the Austin Airport is available for anything anytime, and there is a great dry lake 25 miles west of Austin, that has a hot spring etc. too. Were supposed to get fuel this year, but sounds like late summer or fall. I'm in the process of riggin up a 500 gal. mogas tank now.

The cool thing about landing or takeoff competitions on the dry lake, is you can fairly easily see the tracks to tell who won.

Really just depends on the year if they are dry or not in April-May, there's a big landsailing meet on my dry lake (Smith Creek) on Memorial Day, and it occasionally is too wet. It's covered with snow and ice now, but when it warms up, doesn't take long to dry out.

Re: Flaps on Takeoff -from CPA

The Alvord sounds great! I've flown over it but have never landed. A piece of advice: it's so huge you will never find the group, unless the first one there picks out a camp site, then listens for planes and radios his lat/long on some agreed freq. Then, just follow your Loran! :)

Here's a nice image I found on the internets:

Not only that, you can't pump it yourself in Oregon! Alvord or Utah works for me, I'm right in the middle of both :D

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Austin would be perfect!! How about the same weekend as the Fly In? I know Joe already has competitions every year.

Re: Flaps on Takeoff -from CPA

Hey Pat
NBD. I was getting a little confused. Happens a lot at m age, you'll see  . Personally, I wouldn't want to combine flyins. I think they are like the pretty gals you hang out with, the more the merrier. =D>

You are still in Ca., and gettin a lot of flyin in, that's cool. Did you ever go fly the hills over by Borrego? The 180 you were flyin with used to belong to a friend of mine in Sedona Az.

If you got that much extra time, ya oughta come over this way for a few days.

Have a good evening

Re: Flaps on Takeoff -from CPA

You know me Gary......It's all good!!! I would love to get over your way sometime. But not going to happen this year. After I get the plane back to Idaho (oh, yes.....I'm still in SoCal for a couple more weeks), it will be parked for a little while. For one, my fuel budget is about used up for 2010 already (too many great flying days here in SoCal than I expected), And I'll be busy working till Sept and not sure if I'll have a job come Oct. So I better save for a rainy day! I'm still planning for BCP.org fly in at JC, Austin, NV fly in, and this other fly in we're talking about on this forum (if it close to Boise). And just short local flying to stay currant.

If anything, I'll try to plan a road trip in the rig through Durango when I'm headed for the mid-west from SoCal (or vise versa)!! You have someplace around there I can park the rig?

Re: Flaps on Takeoff -from CPA

I've just been told by a fuel supplier in Burns, OR that effective January 1, 2010, 91 octane non-ethanol gas can be sold into portable tanks in Oregon. Apparently Nevada has been able to do that for some time. I just spoke to the folks at the Denio store and they indicated that they have an empty tank that might possibly be available for the 91 oct. non-ethanol mogas. They purchase their fuel from the same supplier that I spoke to in Burns. Since I just wrote the preceding information, I just got off the phone with my friends Sandy and Tom Downs, the owners of the Fields Store. They told me they would investigate the possibility of putting in an additional tank to stock 91 octane non-ethanol gas that might possibly be available on an ongoing basis. Sandy asked me about the benefit of having her stock 100LL but my gut feeling is that, from their perspective, that the non-ethanol 91 oct. would be better. Please weigh in here with some chatter so I can pass your thoughts on this to her when she gets back to me. In my opinion, Fields would be a better alternative than Denio. Phil

I'd prefer ethanol free premium mogas and the fields location.
