Flew a big tire Evolution today.

Okay so I didn't takeoff or land it, but once in the air I flew it. Very cool. Have to admit 4,000fpm climb is pretty cool. 275kts cruise is pretty cool. 60kt stall speed is pretty cool. 4,000fpm emergency descent is pretty cool. 90 miles engine out glide from 25,000ft is pretty cool. Air conditioning is pretty cool. Beta is very cool. Grass runway capable is very cool.

I have to admit that pitching the nose forward on touchdown is VERY disturbing for a tail dragger pilot.

OH, and the coolest thing of all. It's an Experimental!

Re: Flew a big tire Evolution today.

Phil,
I have been very drawn to these machines lately........ As I consider moving into a piston twin, the Evolution really has many advantages, other than the initial cost. In my case, this is a far off dream, but I am determined not to let this dream die!

What is the baggage area and access like? Lancair is just over the hill from me, but I am doing my best not to tempt myself!

Scolopax, can you get a full size bike with one wheel off in an evolution if you take out one of the rear seats?

Re: Flew a big tire Evolution today.

high road,
The cargo door doubles as an emergency exit so it's a pretty good size. The cabin is tall enough, even in the back seat area that a six foot tall woman with a beehive hairdo doesn't hit the ceiling (she was a backseat passenger today). This gives the cargo area a bigger size then it appears. I didn't take measurements but I'd guess overall it is a little smaller then a 185's with extended baggage. With the back seats out, for sure you could get a full size bicycle in with the wheels off.

I see one of these in my stable at some point, but may have to wait until I sell my business. Way better, imo, then any piston twin I've ever seen, and tons cheaper to operate.

Re: Flew a big tire Evolution today.

Why does it show a cruise of 300kts but a Vne of 256??

Re: Flew a big tire Evolution today.

Because VNE is listed as indicated airspeed and cruise speed is in True Air speed.

I'm guessing because it's a VNE of 256kts Indicated airspeed. The 300kt true airspeed is attained at a high altitude, where indicated airspeed will be much lower because of the lower density air.

256 Indicated vs. 300 True.

Re: Flew a big tire Evolution today.

Here is a couple pictures of the G1000 panel in my plane that shows you the difference on the IAS vs KTAS at high altitude. Definitely gets to be a big spread up high. Now I need to learn how to turn the pictures so you can see them normally!

I had to do the math on the payload too. Just glancing at the weights it made me wonder. Lots of fuel.

You can get two full size bikes in the Evolution with two people and other gear. Two long wheelbase 29ers might be a bit of a challenge, but definitely two with both wheels off.

It really is a remarkable plane! The stall characteristics are as docile and predictable as about anything I've flown.

In case you haven't seen this one:
