I keep asking myself if this could have been avoided if both planes were equipped with ADS-B in and out. I keep getting the same answer. YES

I was out flying yesterday, and I really appreciated all the planes with transponders on in the radar area, and I especially appreciated those aircraft with ADS-b out. Conversely, I was frustrated when planes would report a position near me and they didn’t show up in the box. Some people would think that ignorance is bliss, but on my 1 hour flight, I made several flight path changes to prevent potential conflict, and it is always surprising to see how many aircraft choose my exact altitude to fly around that I would not otherwise know about unless they are within visual range...which, let’s face it, doesn’t leave you a lot of time to deal with when we are traveling at high speed. If it turns out that the Ketchikan accident were indeed a midair, and if these aircraft didn’t have functioning ADS-b technology onboard, then I wouldn’t want to be the person who decided not to install it.

I almost hit 2 eagles on takeoff yesterday and had about 3 seconds to bank hard left to avoid taking them into my wing. I wish eagles would show up in the box as well.

I didn’t read anything in the article mentioning ADS-B at all but I might have missed it.

Ketchikan area is a wild place. More flights than Juneau and no tower. It can be downright crazy at times.

ADS-B isn't a magic panacea for see and avoid. The update rate is relatively slow, and it has data limitations that make high traffic density areas difficult to represent all targets.

I was departing Troutdale, Oregon into Portland's class C last week on a 5 minute flight to Pearson in Vancouver, WA at sunset. Immediately after takeoff the Troutdale tower warned me of traffic. I saw it on ADS-B. The converging traffic had me on ADS-B too. Even so, we were probably 200 yards apart at the same altitude before I saw him perhaps 30 seconds after the call. Another 15 seconds and we would have been in about the same spot. He was flying an olive drab Cub-esque airplane in terrain surrounded by dark green, and I don't recall him saying he had me in sight...

I like to think of ADS-B as sort of like a construction worker's safety harness.

It's there help if you make mistakes. If you fall, it will catch you. However, you shouldn't rely on it.

With ADS-B, hopefully it will help alert you to traffic you may not have noticed. However, you should still be scanning for traffic/hazards with your own eyes.

Even then, accidents can still happen. Very sad, indeed. Hopefully we can learn some good lessons from it, though.

As much as it seems to be an invitation to a bar room brawl for some, ADS-b has had zero impact on midair stats. A lot more reports of near accidents, perhaps, but then again, perhaps people were simply pleasantly oblivious prior to Ads-b use.
