Fly-In Breweries

With the other beer thread going on I thought this would be a great idea. I'm a huge craft beer fan and I love going to breweries and trying new beers. I've been to quite a few breweries via the 170. Some of the breweries are within walking distance and some are a little further and a folding bike comes in handy. The only bad thing about flying to a brewery is you can't have a taste while you're there! A lot of breweries also have a restaurant too, so it's great to have lunch and bring home a growler of good brew to enjoy after the flight home. Let's use this thread to post your favorite places to fly that are near good breweries.

I'll get us started with one of my favorite places to go, Half Moon Bay. Flying to KHAF is always a good time. The views of San Fransico, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the California coast line on the way down never get old. From the parking ramp at the south end of the field, it's a short walk to Half Moon Bay Brewing Company. They have great food and you can take home a growler of some tasty beer. Their IPA is good and I've had some good seasonal beers they make as well. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating area so that's a plus since we take our dog Tieton with us quite a bit. Another thing I like about Half Moon Bay is that there are some great hiking trails directly west of the airport on some high cliffs with great views. There is also access to the beach from the trails.

Another great brewery here in California is Bear Republic in Healdsburg. The brewery restaurant is about 5 miles from the airport so bikes are a must. They are famous for their Racer 5 IPA but you'll find many other beers on tap that are only available at the brewery.

The craft breweries in Bend, OR are a pretty good distance from the airport, but they are some of the finest around. 27 breweries in a 80000 person town: http://beermebend.com/

Ring me if you are in the area, and there is a decent possibility I will take you to town and show you some of the highlights.

Re: Fly-In Breweries

I mentioned this in another thread somewhere that the business park on the northside of the Sonoma Skypark has numerous wineries with tasting on the weekends. I believe that's close to you.

Terminal Gravity is a nice brewery/place to grab lunch. Fly in to Enterprise, OR and either bike or grab the courtesy car and head on in to town. One of my very favorite IPAs.

Red lodge Montana. If you're agile, it's a short walk slide scramble down to town. Multiple breweries in a little town. One of the most memorable flights from idaho over the beartooths. 12000 ft. Glacier lakes, no place to put a dead plane adds to the memorable Ness.

Re: Fly-In Breweries

I always wanted to visit Lang Creek Brewery in Montana, they even had an airstrip. Unfortunately I read that they closed for business.

The Pelican at Pacific City, OR has a great assortment of brews. It's only a 15 minute walk from the airport.

10-15 min walk to Twisted Snout Brewery from the Toledo State Airport (5S4) in Oregon.

Twisted Snout is part of Pig Feathers BBQ so you can get some great BBQ and fill a growler.

Hangar 24 brewery is practically on the field at Redlands KREI down here in SoCal. No food but a good variety of beer and simple but cool atmosphere. Tons of airports close by with good/decent airport restaurants.

Re: Fly-In Breweries

Sounds good, sign me up. I think you might have it wrong though, they could be 'fly in' breweries but not 'fly out' breweries after some tasting! [-X
I mean you can't go there and not taste right? So taste away and stay the night then fly to another one the next day and repeat.

Here's a thought, do those growlers seal up tight enough that pressure changes don't pop the cap off on the flight home? That would be a mess.

Re: Fly-In Breweries

I've used growers for bottle conditioning home brew. It has to hold in quite a bit of pressure and does just fine. I wouldn't be worried about transporting one in the plane. Potatoe chip bags are a different story, I've had one scare the shit out of me at 13,000ft.

Re: Fly-In Breweries

Today I made the short walk to "Island Hoppin' Brewery" from KORS on Orcas Island, Wa., and picked up a growler of their "K Pod Kolsch". (As I write, the ale is tasting quite good.) An added benefit is that camping is available at the airfield, with shower(s?). It is also easy walking distance to the town of East Sound.

Re: Fly-In Breweries

Knee Deep Brewing is across the parking lot from Wings Grill at Auburn (KAUN).
Knee Deep has a taproom and there is usually a Taco Wagon or a Burger Truck parked out front on Friday and Saturday afternoons.
They have growlers or bottles available to take home.
