Flying Around Moscow, ID

I will be moving to Moscow this winter. Is anyone based out of Pullman or Lewiston or have any recomendations for instruction or rentals near there?

I have a 172 that is currently tied down at LWS.

There is no FBO at LWS that rents planes. However, Inter-state Aviation in Pullman has several rentals. They also have several CFIs on staff, and a neat web based scheduling app where you can see each instructor's availability on a calendar and reserve an hour or two with him, and additionally reserve a plane. When you're ready to take your checkride, they have an FAA designated examiner on staff. They are truly a one-stop shop. I highly recommend them.

There are a few independent instructors in the Lewiston area. The most active one is Dick Roberts. He has his own plane that I think he rents out if you are taking instruction from him. His email address is dr at cableone.net . To my knowledge, if you want to pursue any of the other instructors in the Lewiston area you need your own plane.

The EAA has a chapter in Lewiston, and they have their own hangar and about 50 or 60 members. If you're open to traveling down to Lewiston, it's probably worth joining just for the knowledge that you can sponge. They have a breakfast the first Saturday of each month, and meet on the third Wednesday night of each month. Occasionally the FAA puts on safety seminars at their hangar. There is a small group of them that is making good progress on building a Curtiss Pusher replica from an original set of plans.

It gets pretty windy at the Pullman airport in the winter (20 to 30 mph is not uncommon, and 40 to 50 once or twice a month), although the usual prevailing wind will be straight down the runway. Lewiston is in a hole, and so the winds are usually a little less than half the intensity as Pullman on any given day. Additionally, Lewiston has two non-parallel runways for a better chance of wind alignment, and it's towered, unlike Pullman.

I did my PPL at interstate aviation. I thought it was pretty good. The owner is a good guy but comes across grumpy..you get used to it. I really like my CFI, he was a Maule pilot and was all about getting me through it and not just building hours. I'm sure he has moved on though. I don't know much about their rentals as I only spent 3 hrs in one of the 152's. I did get to log 1.1 in their 207 :D

Thanks for the help. I will check out interstate. I did get a message from flyer, I appreciate it. I should be in the area mid december and ready to fly.

I'm from the Lewiston area originally. I learned to fly at Felts Field in Spokane. Great staff at the time but I heard they have downsized.
