flying through the Grand Canyon

just wondering anyone live in the Grand Canyon area just was wondering what everybody's advice was for flying through the area, procedures etc. as I know. It has some restrictions could be going down there shortly to look at some aircraft and may have to fly through the area. Any advice would be great.

Its a special flight rules area, with a dedicated terminal-type chart that shows the procedures (I think you need to have that chart on board to legally fly there). Basicaly the area is mostly no-fly, with several corridors across the canyon and assigned altitudes for VFR traffic in each direction..
Lots of traffic there too..

that was my understanding as well so do you recommend totally flying around it?

I'd recommend enjoying the canyon as much as possible. During my airline career, expecially when leaving LAS going eastbound...I'd always stay as low as legal and give the folks a nice tour. ATC would let me chose my own course of flight overhead.

My son and I toured the canyon in 2003 in our Maule. We flew into the Grand Canyon Airport: picked up the VFR corridor chart, got a breifing from a Grand Canyon Airways pilot and took a long, beautiful cruise over the sites.

I believe that you have to stay 2,000 ft. above the canyon wall but the corridors zig-zag across and the view is spectacular.

Don't miss it! :)

p.s. While flying the corridor I used my video camera to zoom in on a C-182 flying about 1,000 ft. BELOW the canyon wall. Oh....I wanted to follow him, but didn't dare

Get the Grand Canyon chart and experience some amazing flying! Some of the best areas are open.

A real advantage to small numbers, so I have been told.

I fly the Grand Canyon a lot . Get a Grand Canyon Chart > There's tours
that go out from Boulder City Helicopter's and Fixed wings by the dozens
every day. The tour operators have "blue routes>5>7 etc" that fly (there
on the Grand Canyon Chart)Just stay Above 8000 MSL in the west half of the Canyon -near Grand Canyon National there are VFR corroridors . L25 (
Pierce Ferry) is a good jumping point going east at 9500 msl coming back
east at 8500 msl is good. Anyone sends me a direct email (stingers61b@
cox.net ) and I'll get you some OUTSTANDING Pictures .

You might have been the pilot on a flight I was on some time ago from SNA to ORD. When we got over the Grand Canyon, the pilot come on the PA and said he was going to bank to the left for everyone on the left side of the plane and then bank to the right for everyone on the right side of the plane could get a good view of the Grand Canyon. I thought that was one of the coolest thing's an airline pilot did for his passengers.

You are right Tim,

I always took comfort in knowing that my Pitts and Skybolt had 2 inch numbers. The Maule was built for the Georgia Highway Patrol and has numbers about 2 feet tall!!
