Flying to Auburn WA (S50) this weekend/Trip Report

I'm flying to Auburn this Friday morning and returning to Central Oregon on Sunday mid morning sometime. I've been to the airport a few times in the past and am familiar with getting in and out but I've always returned on the same day and this time I'll be staying a couple days to watch the Crossfit Northwest Regionals at ShowWare Center.

I'm curious if anyone here is based on the field or has any inside information to make my tie down experience the best possible? Name dropping is always a bonus 8) Or if you or anyone you know has some hangar space that you are dying to have occupied by a C-180 for two nights?

Thanks,

CW

Good luck at Granite Man, gptc! (I'm guessing that's the Tri you are doing.)

Indeed I do! We qualified a team and two individuals to compete this year so I'm heading up with a plane full to offer our support! Looks like the weather should be great too!! Maybe I'll catch you at another event some day! Good luck at the tri! Hope the water's not too cold!

Yup Granite Man it is. I am an a Co-Ed team this year. So all I got to do is keep the bike on 2 wheels.

Austin Stack (CrossFit The Den) will be up there competing this weekend as well. Also, a friend owns CrossFit Reflexion and qualified as an individual, but is part of their team. It should be a lot of fun!

There is a Strongman comp in Redmond around the first of August that I will be competing in. We should meet up.

Re: Flying to Auburn WA (S50) this weekend/Trip Report

Made the trip and all went well! On the way up the mountains were beautiful (Hood, St. Helens, Adams, & Rainier) and only a few clouds to deal with below us as we got closer to the south edge of the Seattle class bravo. Took the trip at 8500' on the way up with flight following. Made the request to approach to transition the bravo airspace if necessary for a VFR decent so we could get comfortably past the foothills which was granted with no issues.

Auburn is a nice airport for getting in and out of the Seattle area and in this case it was closest to our event. I hear it can get busy sometimes but every time I've been there it's been quiet and this trip was no exception, not another airplane flying in or out! There was a cool Lake Amphibian taxiing for fuel just after we arrived :D . The tie down rates are $5 per night or $10 for a covered parking spot! No one was there when we arrived so I called later in the day to leave some contact info and the lady I spoke with was very friendly. Don't know much about a courtesy car or taxi services because we had a car dropped off for us by a friend but I'm sure they are available. There is easy access to and from the airport and it's not too far from I-5.

The event was pretty awesome as well! One of the competitors I was there to watch is Cody Anderson competing as an individual and he got the second fastest time in the world (4:14) on the third workout (30 burpee muscle ups for time). The record is 4:11  . Our team got knocked out of the competition early with a little judging controversy and our female individual competitors are still doing well in the middle of the pack +/-. The competition continues thru today and those who finish at the top will go to the world games in So-Cal. gptc Austin Stack is currently sitting 12th! He did well last night on the dead lift / box jump WOD (Workout Of the Day).

We decided to leave Saturday night instead of Sunday morning and the trip home was uneventful. Again nice weather and I decided to fly a little lower and even followed the Deschutes River for a little bit. All in all another perfect example of how aviation can be a great asset in our lives! 1 hour and 28 minutes each way as apposed to 6 hours driving!!

Sorry no pictures!

gptc, we'll definitely hook up when you come to town! I assume you're going to fly right? :D . PM me with the details of the Strongman competition when you get a chance.

That's pretty cool you can get a covered parking spot, especially in the PNW!

It was a well run event. I don't like that they make you poor out your water and other food outside so that you can buy $4 waters inside :? , but it was cool being there.

I'm not planning on going to JC this year but you never know. I might change my mind??
