Fokker Dr.I Triplane - Old Kingsbury Aerodrome

November 9, 2013 - Fall Fly-in & Picnic

Gone to six of these fly-ins (Spring and Fall), always hoped to see the Fokker Dr.I fly, today it did.

Awesome! Thanks for posting.

I'm a big fan of aircraft from that era and the pilots who restore and/or build replicas of them and fly them.

I'm sure those Dreideckers are a handful!

The comment "He's not done yet" on rollout is one I've made many times to prematurely exultant passengers when we're still on the mains after touchdown. It ain't over 'til she's in the hangar. :)

So true, especially with planes from this era, some with no brakes, no tail wheel, and no steerable skid - hence no way to steer the plane on the ground if you are trying to stop at the same time.

One of the onlookers asked "what year was it built", the answer given (other then the rotary engine) was 2010. Sadly the last real original Fokker Dr.I was destroyed in WWII by the Germans during their London bombing campaign, where it resided in a museum in London. At least that's my understanding.

Hard to imagine dogfighting in planes like this, and without parachutes.

Came across this original footage of the Red Baron. Pretty cool.
