How do you have them fastened in? For example, if you crash and there's a very survivable 9 g deceleration from the front, will the survival knife (or ax or shovel) stay put? Might it depart the sheath (from the image it looks like there's no retainer on the hilt)? Could one or more of those edged tools become a lethal missile that might turn an otherwise bent metal event into something involving serious injuries or fatal? I recall a talk by John King a few years ago where he discussed a tool box in the back that nearly killed Martha. I think about that talk every time I stow anything in the baggage compartment beneath my cargo net.

...seems to be sturdy. I used screws through the reinforced edges of the nylon bag for the shovel. The picture was taken prior to mounting them while I was still fitting stuff. I keep a tool bag secured to the fuselage tube between the front and rear baggage compartments that blocks the the majority of the paths forward. I thought the same thing you did but chose to mount them anyway.

Sorry to slightly change the subject.

A mini shovel from Home Depot, plus a medium camp axe, bow saw, and good knife work great. The shovel has a great “T” handle and is used for all kinds of things. 6 inches wide and 27 inch long end to end. Plus $10-$15 bucks. All fit into my camp duffle with everything else.
