65 lb block, 125 hp... looks promising. Has anyone had any experience with this engine in an aircraft?

Re: Ford Ecoboost 3 cylinder engine

I think it's fairly new.

It looks to have some interesting features though:

Re: Ford Ecoboost 3 cylinder engine

This is one of the most promising rpm/torque and weight/power ratio automotive four stroke gas engines ever. I copied this from a write up I read yesterday:

"Ford projected that the 1.0-liter engine will have a rated output 123 horsepower, along with 148 lb-ft of peak torque at just 1,400 rpm.

That's more like the output of a diesel, and it's more torque per liter than any other gasoline engine sold in North America.

Ford didn't quote projected gas-mileage ratings, but it did say the 1.0-liter EcoBoost in the 2014 Fiesta would get the highest gas mileage rating "of any non-hybrid sold" in the U.S. market."

Even with its attractive low rpm power band, the auto conversion has to address the old PSRU/prop thrust issues in repurposing it to aircraft usage. A major drawback of all automotive conversions.

Late edit: In this reference article of its features it states how the flywheel was "unbalanced with weights" to counter the large vibration pulses of the three cylinder. This is going to be a problem when trying to replace the stock flywheel with a lighter one with starter ring and just adding a prop. The counterbalanced flywheel would have to remain in place. http://www.autoevolution.com/news/how-f ... 42910.html
