Foreflight

Just got the new foreflight update, version 4.6. It's pretty major. There was something that I specifically requested and I am excited about - Mountain AWOSs - and some other cool new stuff too:

1) Support for Mountain (off-airport) AWOS - this is big for us here in CO - now if CDOT can just get 'em back online from the wind damage last winter.

2) Ruler stays put when you tap, includes magnetic heading

3) New route editor - pretty awesome

4) map search for gps/waypoint waypoints enroute

These guys continue to pick up their game. I'm excited to use this for my IFR training - and I'll be using it for my x-ctry trip to Airventure next week.

Re: Foreflight

Highlights - according to their email:

- Route Advisor™: support for airway auto-routing, preferred and terminal en-route control (TEC) routes, more assigned routes between airports (up to one year's worth, giving you lots of options).
- Altitude Advisor™: displays a list of altitudes, wind effects, and adjustments for VFR, IFR, and direction of flight.
- Procedure Advisor™: displays a list of SIDS, STARs, and their associated transitions, simplifying SID/STAR procedure selection.
- Intelligent editor: an innovative new route editor that adds drag and drop ordering of waypoints, helpful altitude selection, SID/STAR selection, and route validation as you type.
- Storm tracks: projected storm tracks help you see where storm cells are heading.
- Street maps: new street maps with beautiful, hill-shaded terrain are now included.
- Fast search: keyword search on Airports view is significantly faster.
- Map search: searches for single waypoints on the map do not alter the active flight plan.
- New weather stations: support for off-airport weather stations, like mountain passes and Gulf of Mexico reporting stations.

Re: Foreflight

Now Wing-X will have to 'Up their game'.....

I did the 30 day free trial with both Foreflight and Wing-X a few month ago on an iPad 3 and felt they were both GREAT, with Foreflight being the better/easier/slicker for pre-flight 'homework' and Wing-X being much preferred (by me) for the flight portion. At that point in time, I would have bought BOTH if I flew very much 'in the system' (IFR, ATC, etc) for their individual advantages.

They are (at that point) both COMPLETELY AMAZING! And the fact that a 'tech-retard' like me can use and benefit from them means they are pretty easy/logical/intuitive/user friendly...... Again-AMAZING!
(I didn't say I figured out all the additional peripheral features, but I managed the 'core' ones and saw big advantages to using them)

You said it LC...after trying both out about a year ago, I'm a WingX disciple. But I always tell my students to check out both. Each one has its merits and works equally well depending on how you think. The innovation has just been amazing...my new favorite feature in WingX, the simulated Radar Altimeter!

Just an observation, Foreflight seems to have the edge with "Mac Brains" and WingX with the "PC/Linux/Everything Else Brains". Of course I'm typing this on a Mac now, switched teams after being back in school for a year.

Re: Foreflight

Just downloaded the update... On their video about the upgrades they have a view where all the AWOS stations are showing up in green. Any idea how to get this view?

Re: Foreflight

I've only played a little with Foreflight on an iPad. I also played with Garmin Pilot on it as well as my phone. Any of you guys played with it? I'll eventually get a pad and one of these programs. Just curious how you guys think Pilot compares. I also see that they just introduced the ADS-B receiver for it as well. Looks pretty slick.

I have liked Foreflight over Garmin -- but maybe thats because I have used foreflight for awhile. Played with Garmin but never as much as Foreflight.

I looked at the ADS-B addition for Foreflight but seems around here in Moab/etc out of coverage zones..

Re: Foreflight

Travis,

Those are called overlays - and there are many of them, including looping doppler radar, satellite, fuel prices, TFRs, airmet/sigmets etc. In the map view - select the pulldown for the chart - you can select multiple overlaps as add-ons. To get the green/yellow/red/blue dots - choose flight rules.

Got it. I use the radar/tfrs mostly.

Foreflight

While on long trips or (even short trips) using Foreflight on my IPad 3 it shuts down as in goes to sleep or the screen goes blank, it starts right back up when you push the button, but this is a continuous thing. I've looked and looked for the timer if there is one for the screen time out mode unsuccessfully :?: Anybody else having this problem or know of a cure/

Re: Foreflight

Go to settings, general, auto-lock. Change it to never and you should be good to go. I think :D

Re: Foreflight

Garmin Pilot works ok on my Ipod. Every revision makes it less and less useful for iphone/ipods- the only real functionality is targeted for ipads.

I just don't have a large pad yet. Waiting another year for the ADS-B thing to rattle around my wallet before I commit. I will probably end up with a more mainstream WingX or Foreflight app.

Re: Foreflight

Sadly, the 4.6 is such a major update that it now requires iOS 5.1, something my old iPod Touch doesn't support. :-( It kind of caught me off guard since it was just a "point release" (from 4.5). If it had gone to version 5, it wouldn't have been such a surprise.

Re: Foreflight

The major new feature - the route editor - is not supported on ipods and iphones anyway. Not enough screen real estate.
