Re: Franklin alternator went TU

I tried looking up your alt in the Spruce catalog. I found reference to an ALH p/n which translates to 12V / 55 amp. Drew a blank on the rest of it, although they translate the first digit after the dash: 6 = belt driven, 8= belt driven with blast tube, 9 = gear driven. No 5 shown. No ALH shown in the alternator listings.

If it was me I'd see if that local alt/starter shop can repair it-- if it's a plain old Prestolite, I'd be surprised if they couldn't. If you're worried about paperwork, seems like your local A&P could sign it off as a repair. That's bound to be cheaper & quicker than Aero Accessories, although if you can drive from Camarillo to Van Nuys (twice) that would cut down on the turnaround time.

Re: Franklin alternator went TU

Hotrod- the local shop said they can fix it which would be the preferable course of action where time/money/hassle are concerned. I haven't yet developed a relationship with a local A&P where I'm confident I can get the paperwork done that way. Maybe now's the time to start developing one.

I talked to Susan, the Matriarch of the "Franklin family" today who said that there isn't a direct replacement and that my options are to: a) have mine rebuilt, b) buy a rebuilt one or, c) she could point me in the direction of a mad scientist setup requiring Geo Metro and a 337.

Terry- Thanks a bunch, yours was one of the many voices in favor of the Stinsons that played into the decision to buy it.

Re: Franklin alternator went TU

Not that I would ever do such a thing, of course, but some people might just have the local shop fix it, then forget to put the repair in the logbook. Some people have even been known to keep a separate log of "unofficial repairs".

I would suggest that it's never too soon to start developing a relationship with a good mechanic, not just for annuals but for things like this. I do a lot of my own work under the supervision of my A&P/ IA who can then sign off on it after it passes his inspection. Having a mechanic who is OK with you helping on repairs & inspections (the so-called "owner-assisted annual") really helps keep the cost of flying down to an almost-affordable level. It also results in you being more familiar with your airplane, which really comes in handy if you ever break down somewhere.
