The 8/97 issue of Vintage Airplane has an article about Sentimental Journey 1997, which includes a photo of a Piper J3 (modified to a PA-11) with Whittaker tandem gear. Sez the tandem gear tends to scrub the tires down on pavement pretty bad.
I've also seen a photo of a Birddog with tandem gear. Looks awful heavy, but maybe no more so than 31" Bushwheels-- but I imagine the Bushwheels are more effective and more practical. And easier to find!

Yeah, that's just a funny picture. Andy purchased some new 31's for his Maule and we had some 'what if' fun with them.
