Fuel flow transducer with Pponk engine
Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?
The Pponk is in the plane and I'm trying to abide by JPI's instructions for their fuel flow transducer in the C-182.
Do any of you BCP'ers have a suggestion or pics of a fuel flow transducer installation in a C-182?
I appreciate any and all input about how it has been done.
Thanks,
Rich

You're never too old to learn something stupid.
Pretty straight forward install on a 182, put it in line between the strainer and the carb. When you make the new lines, make them long enough to be able secure it with an Adel clamp and at least one bolt to the engine mount. If you talk to the tech guys, they will also recommend grounding the housing of the transducer to the airframe. And make sure you have the right transducer for a carb/gravity fed system.

As I recall, they usually want a certain minimum length of straight fuel line upstream (and maybe downstream too) of the transducer, to prevent turbulence & false readings. Sometimes kinda tricky to get that with space constraints.

It would be pretty tricky without having the line crazy long, the way the fuel line is routed to the carb on most of these planes has some significant bends, I would just use good judgement when installing. Most lycomings, and continentals you see won't really have a very straight section and they all work fine.

I googled up JPI's installation manual. I was wrong- no straight section of line required.
They do mention that if the transducer is mounted higher than the carb, you should put a loop in the line to the carb (see page 4).

I have noticed too that fuel flow transducers are sensitive to RF.
WX RADAR, RADAR altimeters, Transponders, VHF, UHF can alter readings. Therefore, calibration using a fuel tank dip stick is not a bad idea during the first few flights. Or alternating which instruments are active to see any discrepancies during flight, especially at high power settings.
Kind of like swinging a compass with the engine running and turning on/off instruments to see the deviation.

It is better to be late in this world, than early in the next.
THANKS, to all of you who responded. Your input gave me confidence and I completed the install today. Yeah, it took much more fuel line than I expected but it fits pretty closely to the JPI recommendation.
What a great community we have here at BCP!!
